I've wanted a surround sound system but stay on my own. I was wondering if a quality set of headphones for the TV would be a quality alternative or would it always be missing something on a full 5.1 set up?

I have a set of Astro A40s for my gaming, consists of a dongle that helps it replicate 7.1 sounds
It's def not as good as my full surround setup (running 6.1) but is a must for late night sessions..

but you can just get the surround sound dongle bit (astro MixAmp) separately and plug any decent headphones into them,
I've tried the astro dongle bit with my smaller B&W P5s which were ace with them, but lack the boom in war games so I just stick with the full Astro setup as my sessions with the headphones tend to revolve around war games and loud movies anyway.

Don't know how they do it, but the surround effect really is very good from them..

Worth considering wireless ones, means you can pop to the loo or kitchen for a cuppa

If it compromises on quality then I'm not interested, I'd rather just pause the film.
