Where to from an E61 M5
Discussion
I'm a bit stuck and looking for opinions.
I'm probably going to get my fast car thrills from a completely different direction (Alfa 4C) and I think that the sensible option is to move on from the M5. However, I still need a comfortable 5 seater for family duties and I would like it to be an estate. The big question is what?
I could go down the barge route and get a £5K E61 or similar.
Or I could put the man maths to work and try and stretch to an F11 of some kind.
The problem with the £5K E61 is that after the M5 the interior of an early E61 is going to be hard to live with.
The problem with the F11 is that it's just too tempting to keep stretching the budget and going for a very highly spec'd 535i.
Currently the M5 is paid for, so the only costs are Petrol, tyres, warranty, brakes (just done both ends) and servicing. A £5K E61 would return me some cash, but I'd have to sell the M5 privately. For an F11 I could part-ex at a BMW dealer and hopefully only have to bung in another £5K to get something "decent". The real question I'm struggling with is - would this mythical £5K actually lead to me spending less on motoring over the next 2 years?
Not a very logical argument I know - any pointers as to the best way forward?

Really looking to get rid of the M5 to replace it with a 4C - but then that leaves the family load lugger gap.
I could keep the M5 - and may well end up doing that.
No budget as such, just looking to figure out a reasonably sensible way to introduce the 4C into the mix. BTW - the other car in the equation is a 156GTA SW, but from my point of view that's a keeper. It's 10 years old and I've owned it since new. We really only need 2 cars, but I've resigned myself to having 3. I just think that an M5 and a 4C and a 156GTA SW is just a bit OTT. The 156 isn't big enough for family duties any more.

A lot of bloody time wasters out there currently. Proving difficult to sell!!!
Yeah..... I figured that was the case.I don't think I need to act on whatever I'm doing until about April, by which time things might be better. Mind you, I've got alot of "spare" time at the moment to investigate my options...

Theres interest out there but so far nothing with any fruit to bear.
The fact is that there are not many people around who can afford to run and maintain M5s, making them hard to move on, even for silly money.
I tested the market in the summer for my E60....as Eddie said, I became frustrated with people not following through etc....so had it detailed and decided to continue my affair with this great car!
Will seriously consider contract hire next time, as the sale process gets my goat!

I've sold every single car I've ever owned to the first or second person that's viewed it. Try selling a boat and then complain about time wasters!
Good for you! Ive also sold all my previous cars very quickly and not lost money, but im sure this is more luck than judgement. We're not selling boats!Contigo said:
I'd be willing to bet that there are alot of lurkers who just want to send a mail to Eddie based on the posts on here and the fact his car is "known" on these boards.
Yeah, had a few of those but all have had delusions of getting a bargain 'cos its christmas'!! One guy offered £19k saying he couldnt afford more because he had a pram and baby set to buy. M5 might not have been the best car for him in my opinion.ecain63 said:

The market for these cars is tiny and is reflected in the difficulty selling...unless really cheap.
I've sold loads of niche cars privately over the years....Aston, xkr, Maserati, vxr8, etc and none were as difficult to shift as the m5. Something about bmw buyers maybe?
I tried selling my touring this time last year and by the time I was offered a decent price Id made other arrangements (sold the wifes ML within a week!) so pulled the plug.
Turned out to be a good decision tho as I can't really find a suitable replacement. There really isnt much else short of a supercar that compares and that includes c/e63s and the new m5.
Only real option is a change in direction like the OP.

Why not the F10?
I had a good look at one of those "performance" editions the other day....stunning looking thing in frozen blue.
Ridiculous price tag of course.....£22K for a paint job!
Values are falling rapidly and they're getting into more sensible realms.
But no V10, eh?
I don't actually need a big car like an M5, just happen to love M5s.
The only other thing for me is the 911 route, probably a 997 Carera or turbo.
It's hard after an M5!!

Although there 'might' be some seasonal variance, given the fact the UK economy is likely to remain pretty much in the doldrums the next 4/5 years, I'd say the opposite is probably what will happen. Not that I'm being a wet blanket, I really do hope the UK can pull itself out of the mire it's currently in as quickly as possible, but the fact remains the timeframe for it to happen is years away and in that time actual 'selling prices' for very expensive to maintain and run cars is only going one way.. if you are lucky and do get a serious and non time wasting potential buyer offering you a decent price, then do the deal asap!
Cheers, Dennis!
I sold my E61 M5 earlier this year. The first person to look bought it.
You have to be realistic on price, and I priced mine very competitively with what else was around at the time.
Price it correctly and it will sell, but everyone expects a bargain, especially when buying privately.
I must admit I only had 3 calls for the car. They only appeal to a small number of people.
I still miss it though!

I'm not banking on an economic miracle, but I am assuming that with improved weather and Xmas being a distant memory, people might be more inclined to frivolous purchases. My M5 is very highly spec'd, (full leather, active seats, individual hi-fi, comfort access, TV, DAB etc etc - in fact I'm not actually sure which options - if any - it's missing - maybe blinds on the rear windows) so it might appeal to someone looking to keep it for 3 months and then move it on I think I will do some digging around the F11 option - I've kind of expanded my thinking to considering the 520d, the 535d and the 535i - the 520d because there are LOADS of them for sale, and if they're a half decent drive it might offer the best value. 535d because it's supposed to be an awesome car - however I've never driven a diesel I liked so far - but then again I haven't driven many.
I also think I'll start looking beyond E61s for the 5K barge option. An Audi A6 might work. It needs to be an estate, so that rules out a 7 series.
The other option is an Alpina B10 - but they're not very common.
