A different question hopefully…

I am looking at buying a new car ( well second hand) and there is a mixed list of BMW Ford and a VW in there! I am being told that OEM BMW parts will be more expensive than others, I am not convinced about this as unfortunately my limited take on things is that when you get to the bespoke OEM only items they are all very expensive for what you get… and there will be a little difference for a similar item in particular between a VAG and a BMW item.

Just to clarify I am not talking about discs, pads, etc or labour costs

Thanks for your thoughts / help

????????

Broadly speaking, routine service and replacement items (including batteries and brakes) are good value and quality from a main dealer - because they have to compete with independents.

Broadly speaking, interior components and body trim are expensive from a main dealer - because they don't have to compete with independents.

Broadly speaking, the more expensive the cars are when new the more expensive the "expensive" replacement parts will be.

sorry i did not want to pick a specific component as that is not overly fair and does not really inform the convesration as one OEM may happen to be signicantly cheaper than the other on one component, but in the round levels up??? in particualr in relation to BMW v VW/Audi

but for arguements sake lets choose an exhaust valve related to the particulate filter?

i do take your point though that the more expensive the car the more expensive the spares can be but i am looking to try and clarify this cheers

All I know is that with BMW's, you want to be using OEM parts only.

Comparing like for like I don't think there's much difference in terms of value; a plastic clip for a BMW is the same as a plastic clip for a Ford, however, some bits will be a lot more.

Take coilpacks. My 7 series is around £35 a coil, my Renault £17.50, the ones on my Renault are st though.

Sensors; the MAF on an M5 is an incredably high tech bit of kit. The map sensor on my Saxo isn't, hence it costs 3 times as much for the BM

A 2001 Peugeot 406 Coupe cost £26,012 when it was new. To buy all the parts individually and build one yourself would cost you £176,782.99.
