I'm glad that the DVLA are modernising their operations, automating more processes, moving more services online. Apparently over 1000 jobs are at risk in local offices, but these are jobs that can be done by a computer these days, and also jobs currently staffed by some of the rudest and most imcompetent 'workers' in the public sector. So, strike all you want but pretty soon you'll be for the bullet and there's nothing you can do about it providing the gov and the authority don't back-pedal like pussies.

Face up to progress - life isn't a fking charity, and Merry Christmas!

In my experience the branch offices were much more helpful than Swansea.

I just found out by going to a DVLA office... Gutted. Tried calling them before I left, but kept getting we are extremely busy at the moment message.. Nothing about being closed due to a strike.
Lucky the DVLA office is only 2 miles away.

I had to use one recently to get a replacement tax disc after the last one was stolen with my car.

The documentation clearly states that it costs nothing to get a replacement when the original was stolen, yet I had to repeat myself to the guy for 10 minutes stating as such. It's only £7 to replace for any other reason, but after shelling out £'000s because the car was stolen, I begrudge being robbed by the authorities.

He then said I needed to provide the crime reference number to get it for free, which I didn't have to hand. It took another 10 minutes of him doing something in a back office to come back to me and say his manager said it is okay "on this occassion" and he then went on to complain to his colleague about how it would have been nice if he had been told of this change.

So, what should have been a 2 minute job to review the forms and give me a replacement tax disc turned into a 20 minute period of hassle and bad attitude.

And all for something I should be able to get sent to me for free direct from the DVLA anyway! They manage to send me a brand new one every year after I pay for it online, why on earth can't they do the same for replacements?

my previous experiences of the local offices were ok, however Ive just done a plate transfer which now has gone through Swansea, bought the car on a sunday, posted off transfer documents on the monday to my local office. On the friday I recieved back the documents from swansea, transfer completed, the plate is on the car. Today, which is a week later than the other documents were returned, the V5 arrives. So the whole transfer was completed in less than two weeks, over the christmas period, and I had initially sent the paperwork to the local office. In the past I had at least a two week wait for the first documents, and another two week wait for the V5. Looks like progress to me!

Yes, the OPs post is ignorant and foolish. The only people who appear to be competent or able to resolve issues are found at the soon to be closed VROs.

OP = bell-end.

I hate having to deal with DVLA but putting that aside for a moment when Ihave had a problem that requires me to speak with a person face to face I always found my local office to be very very good indeed.

When I register my latest Camaro I will probably be asked to present it to someone to inspect the VIN and make sure the paperwork matches the car, when my local office closes where will I go then ?

What do you expect from an IT consultant?

Before working in IT, I worked in the motor trade and had to deal with DVLA branch offices on a regular basis. Working in IT, I'd prefer to move it all online and get rid of all staff in areas of public services where they feel a strong sense of entitlement, and that they can be as rude and objectionable as they like because they know you need them, and can't go elsewhere. This plus unions kill progress. If you allow yourself to get yourself into a career position whereby you can be replaced by a computer or machine, you only have yourself to blame. You don't deserve a job just because you currently have one.

This is a real pain in the arse as I'm only a couple of miles away from the local one, and as others have said it saves telephonic nightmares!

Is this some sort of Welsh Assembly back-door job creation scheme by moving jobs to Swansea? :scratchin: silly

VROs dont appear to be great, until you have any sort of issue and try to rectify it over the telephone or by post.

Im an It consultant and the branch offices have always been really helpful. its the shower of st at swansea that need replacing with a decent online system.. they dont seem to do anything other than loose stuff anyway.

A good central online system coupled with some efficient branch offices for when you need to go and see someone face to face would be the best senario but no we'll end up with the massive faceless unaccountable system that is swansea and no doubt an IT system produced (in the loosest terms) by some crapita that doesnt work and nobody to talk to when it all goes t1ts up....

It may well be. I was commenting more on Capita's steadily taking over the whole country, one service & IT contract at a time.

its a real shame they would struggle to produce a "hello world" program on a zx81 never mind anything more complicated...

edited to say :- even the hello world program would probably cost about 10 million.. take 2 years and the end result would probably be "hola" rather than " hello world" due to spec ambiguity..
