Are you a mechanical muppet or not

If not with the engine warm and stopped remove the inlet to the air side of the turbo and spin it backwards

If it stops instantly then its not a good sign

I thought that but it sounds like its coming from the turbo "area" rather than the front aux belt

Agree with this, feel for play in the shaft too.

No you won't have a feel for play in the shaft as unless your fingers have dial gauges fitted you won't know the difference from end float and free play in the bearings then it being buggered.

Also with a modern turbos the process of going from working fine to be scrap doesn't take very long. Once a blades touches a casing its pretty much instantly goosed.

Never heard a turbo make that noise. Sounds like a belt or something rubbing.

Could be a scored or chipped vane on the turbo... But could also be a belt or tensioner etc! :-/

Swirl flaps, probably not, another job I suppose

So much for swapping the 330ci for a 330d! Petrols are so much more reliable.

Any experts in South Wales fancy taking a look (i'll pay!!)

It can be quite obvious unless you're a ham fisted fool... smile

Have seen a turbo on a Peugeot where you could take the intake pipe off whilst it was running and watch the compressor wheel moving up and down and all about with the shaft, thats proper fked. eek

Take it to Forza West in Chepstow, they`ll diagnose it correctly for you instead of everyone throwing different ideas at you. The owner there, Stuart, is a top BMW Tech and a great guy, really knows his stuff.

My existing car was serviced there and I near nothing my good things

I live within throwing distance of autotec in caerleon but they and all other garages are shut.

I hate being in the position where I don't know if it is good to cost £150 or £1500

Mine has 165k miles, swirl flaps still intact. A good mate of mine also ran a 2002 330d upto similar mileage, with no swirlflap issues. I wouldn't prioritise it if you have other potential spends.
