Road riding around teh Cardiff area.......?

I have just started a new contract which will see me in Cardiff 2 or 3 days a week for the next 8 weeks or so before moving onto Manchester. I usually ride every other evening and don't cherish the idea of not riding during the week, so am planning on taking my road bike with me so I can keep the legs spinning and continue to get the miles in.

Other than having a weeks holiday in Barry Island when I was about 6 (a very long time ago), I don't know the area at all. Can anyone recommend a couple of routes?, looking at the land contours there look like there are some great hills but I have no idea what the roads are like, or if I am likely to get squashed on the country roads around Cardiff. I will be riding in the evenings between 18.00-20.00-ish, so its going to be dark.

Any hints, tips, routes are welcome - equally if I am likely to get myself flattened by heading out into the lanes I would welcome being told to stick to the hotel gym!

Caerphilly mountain to the north of Cardiff is popular I believe. . I live in west of Cardiff and often see a lot of people riding along the a48 into the vale of Glamorgan. That's my usual route but with the dark evenings I have been riding around Cardiff.

get yerself ON TRACK - Newport Velodrome = WORLD CLASS facility run by the council = cheap as chips - fast as fk!

all weather training - I am there 3 x a week and love it.

Thanks guys - I like the idea of the velodrome, I have never tried the track before - do they hire track bikes etc?

Sunday mornings 9-12 used to be the beginners sessions at newport and bike hire was about £7. its worth calling them just to check as i havent been for a while!

as for roadie stuff, head north on the A470 and turn right for caerphilly or left for pontypridd and some good climbs into the valleys. The east is a bit flatter towards Cowbridge.
