I currently drive an 09 Golf GTI and it irritates the hell out of me at times with its rattling from the boot area and numerous other chirps and squeaks. This got me to thinking about some other cars I've owned which have been very quiet and irritant free and in some cases even older than the Golf. There was my Volvo V50 T5 with around 70k on the clock and it was cathedral quiet. We also have an MX5 which is very quiet, in fact quieter than the Golf. And it's an R reg with 48k on the clock.

I thought it might be interesting to hear from others who have other experiences and observations regarding certain brands and models.

I owned a Astra SRI 2.2 for a short time that was extraordinarily quite, so quite in fact my girlfriend at the time repeatedly tried to start it whilst it was running.

Loudest: My Impreza RB5 with some breathing mods.

The loudest was my Corrado VR6. Everything rattles in the cabin. I bought a 2001 E46 330ci which is far better but having had different speakers fitted somewhere along the line there are about 3 slight noises here and there. I need to get some one else to drive it so I can properly locate them and sort them out!

Quietest - An old Fiesta Flight 1.3, crap SOHC engine, peashooter exhaust. Pretty quiet, plenty of wind noise at speed.

Loudest - Current Civic Type R with a Buddy Club Spec II style exhaust, 105db+ at idle.

Two cars, by a huge margin over the others. And I am particularly sensitive to squeaks, rattles and noises - it drives me mental and turns me into the Incredible Hulk, lol!

Anyway, my 1999 Volvo S40 T4 was pure, silent, squeak-free bliss cloud9

Running it a close second, with the occasional slight rattle from the plastic trim that covers the inner side of the tailgate, but is noise-free apart from that, is my current '01 plate Skoda Octavia VRS.

By far the worst was in the '90's - my Peugeot 205 GTi! Had to drive around everywhere with the stereo set to 'Nan' volume biggrin

Range Rover Vogue V8 (L322 shape before I put mud tyres on it) was pretty quiet, no rattles or squeaks either.

Loudest used to be my Mini..

But that's been royally trounced by my Chevy pickup...

My Q7 is pretty quiet, but something in the back seats rattles slightly (think it may be the backrest) and it's annoying the hell out of me.
I'm also very sensitive to noises, I sold my immaculate 330ci because of rattles. My main car has to be quiet or it drives me mad.

My MGF is the complete opposite but I can cope because it's a good laugh and with the roof down you can't hear anything anyway.

My Volvo C70 would be winning if it wasn't for some wind-noise coming from the passenger window, I will fix that one day. So with that excluded, it's my old E34 525i that wins from me.

My Merc E320 is pretty quiet but like a lot of German cars it can generate a bit of tyre noise on certain surfaces. The Volvo S80 I had a couple of years ago was quieter though (Except when the Dynaudio Dolby stereo was on!)

That would be my favorite all time car - be (ex) beloved Galant 2.5v6. I would often drive it so gently you literally couldn't hear then engine while on the move. Then I'd hoon the fk out of it. That dual personality engine is a thing of marvel.
