Hello all, am looking to put one of my cars up for sale soon and it has a private reg I wish to retain for the replacement vehicle. As this is the first vehicle I will have sold with a private plate what is the best hint to do?

Will it be to change the reg plate before advertising the car or can I retain the plate if I get a buyer? As would the buyer still get the V5 etc?

Sorry if this seems silly questions but the dvla site is not that clear.

Thanks in advance

What would you consider the best thing if you were buying?

You can sell the car & send the V5 off once you've sold it promising to forward the V5 on once it comes back with the cars original plate on-this involves the buyer trusting you to do this.

You can sell the car & ask the buyer to remove the plate once he has the new V5 in his possession.-this involves trust on your part that the buyer will bother to do it.

Or you can remove your plate, get the original plate V5 back & sell it as normal with no worries either way.

Just take the plate off, normally takes about 3-5days (normally as the DVLA will have had several days off recently)

Ive been in the situation several times with people wanting to buy cars privately and had a private plate on, ive only once had it were both the buyer and seller were happy to go through with the sale whilst the buyer waited for the plate to come off. Ive probably lost several sales at the point as I refused to allow the buyer to take the car with the plate on assuming he would remove it.

Thanks and that is really what I was thinking to be honest, as you say it will involve trust one way or the other. If the car does not sell then I just put the private ate back on it.

Will the vehicle be given the original reg number back though? As have the plates still in the garage.

Highly likely but not guaranteed as someone could have since bought the original plate, but if its just a normal number chances are you will get it back.

Thanks once more and I guess I will be heading to the dvla next week to get the original plate put back on then.....if it does not sell will just have to put it back on at a later date.

My son sold his beloved Cosworth that had a private plate. He sold it to someone he vaguely knew. the deal was he was to get the number back when so called "friend" got the V5 back. Needless to say, said friend kept the reg and sold it on!

So son lost his private plate. Lesson learned, next time he changed the plate before advertising it.

Simple - fill out the V5C as normal when you sell the car, give the buyer the little slip. Then fill out a V317 form and send that with the V5C to the DVLA.

Don't see how it could be simpler.
