Had to take my daughter to the sales at Westfield, Stratford the other day. What a nightmare, the amount of people crushed into the place was scary and I'm a Londoner so should be used to crowds.

Anyway I got caught up in the hype and showed interest in a set of Beats Solo HD headphones for £125. Told the sales guy that I wanted them in green as I am half Oirish and was told that would be £169 yikes

What's the difference? the green is a special edition but the only difference is the colour. A £44 pound difference yikes Remember when a black Macbook was £50 more than a white one but at least as a percentage of the price it was only 5% more not over 30% more.

This started my sensible alarm and I backed away so my question is:

Are these any good or are you paying for the name and what would be a good alternative over ear headphone?

What is he a doctor of anyway?

Ta.

They are the worst headphones I've ever tried.

Avoid at all costs.

Have a look at the grados. For about 100 quid. Much better sound.... By a long way!

Thanks, I suspected that would be the case biggrin

There are some Bose ones around the ton, are they any good. I was looking for something with an in-line volume and call answer button but it would appear that most of the headphones I have looked at only work with Apple and I have a Samsung S3.

Use your own ears to test them, not those of someone else.

Some people hate Bose with a passion.

It's been a while since I've been headphone shopping, but I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD 580's and they're excellent. I think the updated model is like 590, or something like that.

Those Beats headphones are awful. My mate bought a pair, his first set of headphones, and wouldn't stop raving about them. I had a listen... they were utterly st. Powerful but fuzzy bass that reminded me of a pair I bought years ago, which at the time I really liked, but only because they cost £20. They fkers were nigh on £300 IIRC.

If you like natural sounding, or neutral even, go open back. If you want bass, buy closed back.

Oh, and a headphone amp is a cool gadget to have too ; )

Cheers all. I have been down to Currys where you can plug your phone in and test a very limited selection. They had a Beats £200+ job next to some Sennheisers. The Beats did indeed sound awful and the Sennheisers sounded pretty good.

Odd as the Sennheisers were only £35.

I own a pair of grados and love them but they are not really suitable for a teenage girl ( unless she is really into sound quality rather that fashion).

if she is interested in sound and looks go for some audio technica's.

Good advice, but try a pair of Bose AE1 around 120 quid, either that or the default Sennheiser

Grado's , AKG, Sennheiser, bayerdynamic, audio technica etc.

Plenty of good brands and my Sennheiser HD202's (about £20) sound better than Dr Dre's

Beats headphones - last time I was in That London I saw a generic hip ethnic youth person wearing them over his hoodie. Says it all really.

for around that price a pair of B&W P3's would be achievable (£169) and though I've not tried them if they are anywhere near as good as the P5's they'll be awesome.
