How to trace my great grandfathers records from ww1

The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was in existence from 1912 to 1918.
In July 1914 the RFC's naval wing was detached to form the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). On 1 April 1918 the two services were merged again to form the Royal Air Force (RAF).
Over 26,000 members of the RFC and nearly 27,000 men of the RAF are listed in the campaign medal records.
The service records of RFC airmen who died or were discharged before the foundation of the RAF were kept with the British Army personnel records, of which only about 40% survive. However, RFC records may still be found with the RAF records.
If an RFC airman continued to serve in the RAF after April 1918, his record would be kept with RAF service records.

Also worth searching the London Gazette - which is how I learned one of my lot got a DFC.

DFC here as well, my grandad sank a u-boat in his B24, U844 if anyone's interested.

From what I can gather his name is John Ernest Faid DOB 4th June 1899 he was a second lieutenant when he resigned his commission in the RFC on the 2nd Oct 1918 having been classified unfit for flying duties on the 24th of July 1918. His address at the time was 8 Cotterdale Avenue Gateshead on Tyne.
Its family folklore that he wrote a book about the RFC, I remember a copy of the book knocking around when I was a nipper, however I can't find any details of it now. He was also a friend of either Shackleton or Scott the Arctic guys.
This started as helping my daughter with a school project, but I have to admit I'm getting more and more curious

Good shot. Mine rearranged quite a lot of Germany in 30+ raids as a Lancaster bomb-aimer.

I'm also intrigued to find history of someone from WW1. My grandfather passed away a few months back (just before his 90th sadly) when going through all of his old WW2 medals we found a medal from WW1 but the name engraved has no family connection that we are aware of.
