Another Battery Question !
Discussion
996 turbo : I had a new Battery fitted about a year ago, but in the intervening time the car has spent extended periods "under the care" of various garages for a non-related (gearbox) problem.
When I finally got the car back the Battery went flat after sitting idle for 10 days. I suggested to the OPC that perhaps the "new" Battery hadn't been well maintained this last year, whilst in their tender care , & they changed for a new one without quible.
Car has just sat in a garage this last 14 days after having been driven for about an hour & a half. Temp hasn't been too cold, seldom less than zero, for sure more in the garage.
Starting it up the windows dropped a tad & it slurred into life (the symptoms I had the last time I drove on the previous battery just before it expired.)
Drove the car for half an hour (with lights on ) came back, tried to start it. . battery Kaput.
Is it "normal" for these lousy Porsche batteries to drain completely after 2 weeks, or does it sound more like I have an issue with the car leaking my volts away ? I know they are cr@p, but didn't think they were SO cr@p.
According to the handbook 12-16 volts is normal, I had 13 whilst driving, but car wouldn't subsequently re- start, is that indicative of some other problem ?

Apart from being in the custody of your OPC your symptoms sound like mine. Looks like these battery's don't stand up too well in the cold weather if not regularly used.
It was in December of 2009 that my 996 TT X50 battery expired in the same way. Both were maintained with the use of CTEK and Ultimate battery conditioners.
I changed the TT battery for a Bosch S5 and the transformation in ease of starting was notable even in comparison to a brand new Porsche Moll battery. But in that instance my TT had just gone out of extended warranty - happy days!

Had a Bosch before, but the car was off the road a "long" time & I (my fault) let it die. When it was taken to Porsche after a 2 year "hibernation" they fitted this lousy OEM battery. . . which was knackered by the last 1 year on/off "hibernation".
Totally disillusioned at the latest inability to hold a charge for 2 wks for gods sake. . .are they REALLY that bad ? if so, I will just cut my losses (as I did before) & throw 250? 300 ? € at another Bosch .

You can get the Bosch (S5 010) for around £90. If Porsche don't replace mine under warranty (unlikely but possible), I'm very tempted to go the Bosch route - not for the cost saving but because it's a better product.
Porsche Assistance sent out an RAC guy who said he had a suitable battery in his van (not Porsche of course), and would have happily fitted that had I not mentioned the fact that it needs to be Porsche to comply with the warranty terms.
