S3 battery save

Hello... and Merry Christmas!

I have my S3 sitting in the garage SORN at the moment. I turn it over, run it for 10 min and drive it around the garage block every 2 weeks or so.

I have been advised to use a trickle charger, or battery save on the battery. I have tried Halfords and Motoraids, neither sell them anymore. Any recommendations?

Have a great New Year, and I hope to see some of you at the Spa classic weekend. That will be my first TVR trip and I cannot wait!

Santa bought me a CTEK MXS 5.0 which is a very neat unit and comes with nice leads that connect to the battery so a convenient plug/ socket arrangement. Early days but pleased so far - bought this after research on a few units and some good recommendations from other PH forums.

I use Optimate but I know Lidl/Aldi do similar chargers every now and then. Friend uses them on his collection (Yes I'm jealous!) with no probs.

Spend your money on some tax not a battery conditioner and drive it !!!


perhaps we should start the 12 Months Tax Club, these guys look like potential members

I would do, if I had the time to do it over the winter...

Problem is, I don't. So December, January and Feb it will be in the garage. Unfortunate, but true.

I don't have mains in the garage, so I would need a battery version?

Or I could just keep running it every week or so.

I tax mine for 12 months and enjoy the occasional drive at this time of year. Mind you, I got VERY sideways today by putting the power down too early when accelerating out of a corner on a greasy road. At least these are so easy to catch when they do oversteer. I was showing my brother how nice an S3 is compared to his MX5 and Morgan so that might have backfired!

I understand the need for people to take their vehicle off the road in winter to save some road tax. The return on investment is not as good in the winter.

C-Tek chargers have a good reputation and are good for winter maintenance of batteries.

Are you sure? I got this one a few months ago - does the job.

Great. I will try again.

I did tax for the 12 months and then when it got darker I realised the lack of drive time! Especially with the 1hr plus commute at the moment. Bit of a pain in the rear!

I have the same as RAYTVR on my S2 and use an old Mk1 Optimate on my motorbike although this is now on its last legs.
I have mine taxed all year and although it doesnt tend to get used during a week day it is used most weekends.
