Which Magnatec

Hi Folks

I know the 'which oil' thread has been done to death but I plan to put Magnatec in my car at its next service and was wondering which grade is best:

15w something mineral oil
10w 40 semi-synthetic or
5w something fully synthetic

????

Just filled mine up with 15/50 Carlube Gold, as told to by my 'man' cheapest oil change ever at £7.99 for 5 litres

I've sludged Magnetec in a Lawn Mower so draw you own conclusions. I find Mobil 1 Motorsport pretty good. Have tried others but always gone back to Mobil. Retains its colour/clarity and oil pressure between services. Griff doesn't use much at all either. A touch pricy but in the overall scheme of things very small change indeed.

Wouldn't go near a mineral unless you are prepared to change it frequently. Same for semi-synths. As they get hot, they start to burn off and the oil degrades into sludge PDQ. End result is reduced protection.

Mike at Austec uses Valvoline semi-synth 10-40. Told me Magnatec semi-synth 10-40 would be as good and mix fine with the Valvoline and is easier to get. He seems to know his TVRs.

Based on the info in opeioilman's thread's and emails I'm giving some Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 a whirl.

Apparently the RV8 engine requires an ACEA A3 spec oil, which Mobil 1 also is.

Difference here is that Silkolene is an ester based synthetic - therefore polar - therefore offers the "magnatec" type properties. It's also a bit cheaper than Mobil 1.

So the mitigation for 'cheap' oils such as Magnetec is frequent oil changes ?

I get the oil changed every 3k miles. The car has now done 59k and she's still running the original cam and made good power on the rolling road, so things can't be in that bad a shape.
