mtb helmet

Hi all,

I'm after a new crash helmet. I currently have an old giro e2 but I feel like it sits on top of my head and not around it.

Looking at the giro xar, also tried on a hex recently and like it, any opinions or other options welcome please......

I have the same problem -I have a very small head and I look like a complete dick in most helmets - akin to a cotton bud due to my tall thin frame.

I currently use a kids size 'piss pot' BMX helmet which is far from ideal - a full face DH lid fits far better but is massively overkill for anything other than DH riding..

I am no expert on helmets but plenty have views on here, it generally erupts into some kind of discord, usually when discussions about whether people should wear one or not.

I have researched loads and maybe I am spending too much but the POC Trabec seems to be pretty well received and seems to cover a great deal of the head, just not the top.

I have ordered one and should get it later this week. Not cheap though but thats my decision and I will feel safer with it, plus it doesnt look stupid, like some bike helmets do (my opinion only :-) ).

You would be more sensible to go and try some on a shop as everyones heads are different in shape. I have used Giro for years, but for my road bike got a met helmet this christmas which actually seems to fit snugger than the Giro.

This, correct fit is much more of a safety factor than brand IMHO.

Try a few on and see what suits. I've got the opposite problem, a frankly massive head, I found the Fox Flux and its adjustable cradle gave me the best fit.

You've already got a good list to look at. As has been said, try them before buying. We have 3 Fox Fluxes in the family plus I have a Giro of some kind, name escapes me. Trail type helmets, as you've listed, would appear to offer more protection around the back and sides of the head, plus take a few more knocks when putting back in the car as the exposed surfaces are all covered by the hardshell material.
I think Giro offer a replacement policy, Fox don't and I'm not sure re 661 (I think the latter two come from the same factory) which may have some bearing on which one you buy.

I've got a feature, had it about a year now too and still love it. Very light, plenty of protection round the back, good looks and possibly the best retention system I've used on a helmet. My mate was trying it on at Llandegla the other day and purchased one that evening he was that impressed with it.

I've got a 661 Recon and really like it. Feels good and stood up well to 17.5 stone of me landing on it at the Black section of Whites Level, just a few scratches on the outside.
