If I had the chance to create a job, that otherwise won't exist - but ONLY if I get someone as cheap as possible, is there a 'right' way to go about it?

It's not my company/money, but if I can get someone for around the £14-18k mark, full-time (with weekends being part of the standard week) then it's a job for someone (possibly even a couple at the lower end of that scale). I'd look at it as an entry level opportunity for someone with an interest in events and the right person/people could progress within the company and earn more within a reasonable time-frame. It's nothing compared to what you *should* earn doing events (which have a high staff turnover as it's a ball-ache), but not sure how much work is out there.

Part of me feels I'm taking advantage of the 'tough times' out there, another part feels like I'm potentially opening a door for someone.

Any advice?

lol omg wtf

Supply vs demand, really. Lots of people looking for work (ignoring the professional unemployed) and few places means you get to set the salary and/or get more for your money. For longer term work, though, expect the person coming from a managerial position to disappear suddenly once things turn around.

Increase that band to £18-22k and I think you will see the better applicants (i.e. the people you might actually want in that role). Not wanting to get into a debate, but it could be the difference between getting an 18/19 year old school leaver and a (slightly more mature) graduate

Otherwise, I think you could sell it as a genuine opportunity then I agree with you- it is opening a door for someone. As long as it really is a good opportunity, and not some dead end rubbish with broken promises, then it's all good.

You say that the sector already has a high turnover and this job is below the normal pay. That being the case, don't be too surprised at your new apprentice buggering off when the length of service/experience is sufficient to get them a better paid job elsewhere.

Agree 100% with that. £14-18k is going to get you people who are using you as a stopgap while they look for a proper job. Aim a bit higher and you might get someone who wants to work for you.

Assuming you're a young single person living at home how would you get £300 a week in benefits?

If you want to have someone with plenty of enthusiasm at motorsport events...but not full time, who gets to see the events...with only selling to fans involved. I could be available cheaply smile

We have a pool of staff we call on for events during the year (not that we guarantee how much of any event you actually get to appreciate). I need to add to these for the new year. There's an old advert here (which I need to update / hope is allowed)

If you want to pay low but attract quality, there will have to be additional incentives such as share in profits, guranteed progressive pay rises (obviously based upon performance), discounts around the setvices you provide/are associated with etc. Good luck!

How about offering on the job training which could result in pay increases?

Offer an apprenticeship you will obviously need to release them for training.

A very belated update. Picked up someone who looks excellent for £18.5k, in 10 weeks time if we're happy with him and he's happy he'll move to £22k.

Still need some weekend staff smile
