I went to the last one (2012) and it was incredible. I would recommend getting some radio earmuffs though as it can be very hard to keep track of things, especially when the cars spread out throughout the race and you miss every last bit of commentary!
The noise is unbelievable, especially the first lap when they are all close together.
I'm hoping to go again this year.

Went in 96, Villeneuve won, it's the only time I've been, it was amazing and the noise is something else.

You'll enjoy it.

Personally, I think it is something anyone with petrol in their veins should experience, even if it just once...enjoy!

In UK, you keep up with the action on a mobile via t'interweb. I went to Monaco and had no idea what was happening. We only found out Alonso had crashed when his wrecked car came back and a lad got a text from Belgium explaining the situation.

Be prepared for the noise. The free ear plugs ain't good enough smile.

You'll love it.

I went to the British GP in the year Senna crashed (was at club) - partisan is not the word for it. I also went to Hockenheim the year Silverstone had 'the mud' - it was worse in Germany! My dad also raced in the historic saloons support race about 4 or 5 years ago - I stood on the pitfall next to Vettel who genuinely seemed to enjoy it, he had a sit in our car and my mum got a hug from Barrichello! No atmosphere in the paddock though, unlike a normal club meeting.

Bummer that I usually race the car though!

I'd say its worthwhile for any petrolhead - one recommendation (other than the radio) - earplugs!

Going to a Grand Prix is a unique experience.

It's a fact that you can follow the race much easier on TV at home, so be aware of that.

But at home you don't get the sheer noise of the cars (which is absolutely glorious), the smells (which are a heady mix of race fuel, burnt rubber and brake/clutch material) and the amazing atmosphere, particularly at a dramatic race. Just wonderful.

Was in Melbourne in 2011, awesome sight and sounds.

Wouldnt bother with earmuffs personally, as long as you can see one of the big screens then you can keep an eye on positions. Also try and get the 4 day ticket, you get to see more on quiet days.

I got stuck in the car park at one of the camp sites for around 3 hours afterwards, it was an unbelievable soggy weekend!

Getting a 'fanvision' TV (formerally KangarooTV) is handy if your not going to be near a big screen as you can then follow a driver's on board, or just the standard F1 feed. Commentary is from BBC 5live. or use it to access the live timings (mobilephone signal for internet access can be patchy at times with 100,000+ people there) plus the qualifying footage is repeated later in the evening if your staying nearby (handy for me when i come off post and get back to the marshal's campsite.) costs about £60-70 for the weekend if pre booked and it can be posted to you a week before the race.

Alternatively Silverstone Radio also broadcasts commentary on 97.7FM if your phone has a radio app. the broadcast programs keeps me going on a morning when i get to post around 6/7am and there is nowt on track till 9.

Do take proper ear protection - having had a very cavalier attitude to this I had a perforated eardrum in 96 thanks to Pedro Diniz' Ligier Mugen..It bloody hurt !

Dont bother with ear protection!!!!!! tt. Bring ear defenders and a radio. Radio Silverstone does a great job of keeping you updated. Aside from the experience that TV cant replicate, you also get to see the change in gaps throughout the field lap on lap...

Get in early on all the days, and try and do as much as you can, it's far more than just one F1 race.
Start saving money now and if the weather permits treat yourself to a helicopter ride around the circuit.
If your camping over dont forget evening shows and entertainment.

Just enjoy, enjoy, whatever the weather.

Make sure you arrange to have the race recorded back home, then when you get back you can watch it all over again, with all the commentary, in an armchair with your feet up, and a nice brew and packet of chocolate digestives to hand. cloud9

Assuming it was 1991 you're thinking of, the one where Senna got a lift back to the pits perched on Mansell's sidepod, he hadn't actually crashed at Club: his McLaren had run out of jungle juice.

Last British GP I went to was 2008: Lewis Hamilton wiping the (very wet) floor with the rest of the field.

Had a strange conversation with a dippy waitress at the restaurant in Northampton where we ate on the Saturday night: remember that this is just up the road from the circuit.

Me: Presumably you're finding it a lot busier tonight, what with the Grand Prix being on and everything.

Dippy waitress: Grand Prix? Wassat?

Me: You know, the big motor race down at Silverstone?

DW: Silverstone?? Where's that?

Me: You know, that circuit just down the road....? You know, Lewis Hamilton, McLaren and all that.....?

DW: Oh yeah, of course! My dad is an engineer at the Mclaren factory, in fact!

Silverstone say they are more prepared this year for bad weather.

Do they know something already? LOL

Two things from above need emphasising...

Start saving now - it will cost a fortune and every penny will be a memory. You will regret every thing you could have done, but didn't beacause it cost too much.

Record all the action that you will see (practice(s), quali & race). Save them to DVD before your Sky+ breaks.
