With all the the talk of how good a drivers car the mk1 mx5 is, I'm surprised to see how cheap they sill are.

Rust free UK examples are now becoming thin on the ground, so how long will it be before the last good ones are snapped up by enthusiasts and prices head north ?

It's sad to see so many healthy cars being broken up and sold for their parts as then they are worth more.
I've seen perfect body shells being scrapped.
I asked recently how many 1990 / 91 cars were left but on the O/C forum I just got a load of facetious replies.
With the German rivals now worth peanuts as well, I can't see the situation improving.

For the last couple of years I've thought they've hit rock bottom but they keep falling.

Quite hard to find a really nice one though, rust issues, smokey engines, clunky gearboxes etc.

I highly doubt you will find a rust free UK mark one. All of the ones I have looked at had rusted rear sills.

If i had the room I would fill a barn with them and maybe stick a few 80's 911's and xis in as well.

Then lock the door and wait 10 years.

I too am surprised that prices are so low. I bought mine 3 years ago for £2100. After spending a fair bit on it, I don't think I would get much more than £1600 for it in the current climate. Which is a shame considering it is a genuine rust free, mechanically and cosmetically solid car.

I'm planning on holding on to it for as long as I can until prices head north. It may however be wishful thinking as I think that may be a long way away yet.

Leave it a few years and i think the mk1 will start increasing in value with many being used for kit cars (me included) for an example the mev exocet since lauch only 2 years back have sold over 300 of them and there are several other kits the same as well, with other being broken for parts, or being scrapped then the mk1 will become a sort after car.

But my daily is pretty rusty and as it only cost me 400 quid it will properly be a kit car in a few years time just like my first mk1.

£6k for a low mileage MX5, but generally £1000-1500 buys a decent example

early mk2 mx5s are now as cheap as the mk1's surely these have futher to fall still, as its the mk1s people will want in years to come.

You'd have to be flipping barmy to spend 6 grand on a Mk1 MX5, especially such am awfully specced one as that!

+1 the ad is boosting it's on the original tyres no thanks to drive around on 15 year old rubber. You can get a supercharged one with a lot of work carried out for less than that.

Mine's a UK car. Relatively rust free, although while cleaning it today I noticed a little scab on the front wing, where it's had some dodgy paintwork in the past.

Just in case you didn't know, main spots for rust are rear arches, the sills and where the front wing meets the front bumper. These can, and will, rust anywhere though.

Hope your repairs last longer than the 3 years I got out of mine.....
I'll be onto something else by then I should think, knowing me.

The Mk1 is a hard car to judge, Certainly the more special models and whatever is left in pristine condition should be worth more... original BBR anyone??

But, consider how many MX-5s are about! I reckon it'll be a good few years yet before rust and the kit car guys change that situation.

Probably in 10 years we'll all lament about missing this particular boat but if I were after a desirable 2 seater for keepsies, I'd be looking in the direction of TVR.

Surely 3-4K would see ownership of a wedge and is the Chim doable for 5k?

Perhaps a slightly unfair comparison but I can't see the prospect of a £1500 MX-5 being a longterm thing.

Don't be so sure - I've had loads of TVRs and never kept one over 6 months.

I've owned supercharged MX5s for over 15yrs now and I can promise you that I'll sell my V8 RX7 before I sell my MX5.

I've just spent a good hour or so on the flyin miata website and can't argue with your logic at all. wink
