So, I think I know the answer but I just want some confirmation before I make a mess....

Changed the oil recently (VAG 1.8T engine), but the filter was too tight to remove; so I just put the fresh oil in.
I've now found my filter removal tool; I'm assuming that most of the oil will be down in the sump so there will be minimal spillage if I remove the filter without draining the sump? Especially if I remove it cold?
Thanks smile

It'll be fine just top up after spinning the engine to fill the new empty filter

If it is the right way up you shouldn't loose much at all other than what's in the filter. Fill the new filter before putting it on.
If its horizontal you won't any extra but it'll leak out.

If you definitely have the right filter then a screwdriver hammered through the side will allow you to unscrew it. A little messy though.

Most main dealers dont bother their arse changing any filters...so wouldnt really worry.

but as others say, it will do no harm fitting the new one now.

don't mean to teach anyone to suck eggs, but make sure that you put a smear of oil on the new filters rubber seal, this will allow you to fit and remove by hand.

Yeah, but a turbocharged engine notorious for strainer blockage, and a an old filter operating in bypass makes me nervous..... frown

I did thousands in my time ,why? ---cos I got my arse kicked if I did n't Unfortunatley the modern apprentice doesn't understand any thing not done with a computer !!! . If garage doesn.t do the job properly why use it and then moan on here ,kick ass ,stop payment and ask for the dealer principal in front of a show room full of customers ,you will get satisfaction or be arrested but it's worth it

Must be a very unique dealership you worked in.

As for an apprentice not understanding anything dont done by a computer....when it's car related, I'm sure most wouldnt understand anything done with a computer either lol, because even many of their "master technicians" havent the faintest clue.

It is actually shocking dealerships are allowed to operate such poor levels of competence and customer service. The AA and other motoring organisations, or even trading standards really should come down hard on them. It's bad enough they give crap service, but in many cases to be charging over £100p/h for that makes it even more criminal.

i think your going to the wrong dealerships, i work in a peugeot dealership and i have never seen a car be serviced were the oil filter was not changed, to me a basic service consists of, change oil+filter, top up screen wash, brake fluid, antifreez, power steering fluid, battery acid and if it has a level bung check the gear box oil. then a full check over of the car, lights, washers, wipers, suspension, brakes, steering, body work, exhaust etc anything you can think of really. locks, hingles and battery terminals greased. then road test 2ish miles fill out service book, reset service indicator and then washed.

also not all apprentices are like that, im just finished my 3 years, i on a regular basis replace clutches, rebuild gearboxes, replace head gaskets, rebuild rear beam axles etc. i would say that 80% of my work is mechanical. i also do some computer based diagnostics and some times ive managed to prove the master tech wrong and better him, with by the way is brilliant thing a boy of 3 years experience getting the better of a master tech of 27 years experience. so please dont tar us all with the same brush, the other apprentice at work is rubbish and only does servicing and basic jobs were as there isnt really anything thats i wouldnt have a go at.

I'd say most do the oil filters as its so easy to do. What probably happens more is you pay for a 'service' and they do the oil and filter and that's it, quick look at the tyres and get it out

The SEAT dealer that serviced our black Ibiza used to leave tons of white grease on the hinges - the SM told me they used to use silicone spray but people complained they hadn't been done because they couldn't see it.

what annoys me is at work is we look after some rental cars and on the job card it says "change oil and filter" so thats what i did, then got a dogging for not topping up the levels of checking it over! even the management dont understand the difference between a service and an oil and filter change!

Hmmm...that's a bit worrying. In my experience of using mainly franchised dealers on a range of cars, they usually do a safety check (in reality I guess a large part of it is they're looking for work) on cars whenever they go into the workshop for any reason at all.

There isnt a chance in hell I'd let any main dealer work at any vehicle I own, even if they were doing it for free. Ive been around the motor trade long enough to know what goes on, and seen far too many cars with full service history leave the dealer network after warranty miles are up...and some you'd swear have never had an air filter, never had a fuel filter, never had a pollen filter etc etc. And that's just the very basic stuff they should be changing !

One car recently I seen, although it wasnt a main dealer to be fair...had ticked particular service items were changed....even though the car doesnt actually have them !

Going back years I used to service my own cars but once I got a company car, and then bought my missus a new one, I started using franchise dealers. We have 4 newish cars now, all dealer serviced.

I think I know what I'm looking for and I honestly couldn't point to any specific issues with them, except that, obviously, they generally don't do things like they used to in the old days, or that you might do yourself, like strip and clean brakes, for example.

The tick sheet is a bit of an issue, as they clearly just go through it afterwards and tick everything, so it's pretty meaningless.

as said the tick system is not good because we all know the pen is quicker than the spanner!!,having been at both ends I generally think there are many factors not least of all BONUS !! i.e.more jobs put through more in the pay packet. A profit share is nuch better ,the service shop makes money the mech /tech gets a share it leads to a better atmosphere in the shop etc and far better quality work , the biggest prob is finding good reliable staff, I may have opened a big tin of worms so I'll end at that
