Hi everyone,

my Disco 2 is currently insured as Garaged in a rural village, 2000 miles PA. I am insured as a student, living away with the vehicle staying at home, and had to state specifically in a letter to the insurers that I wouldnt take the car with me, in return I could have it insured for £800 instead of the ~£2k quotes other companies had been giving me.

Now, due to a change of circumstances within several societies at uni such as gliding and shooting (requiring lifts from Bristol to Mid Gloucs for members to be able to go), they will all be desperately short of drivers next term. I also want it down for a term for some extra-curricular stuff I am doing which involves transporting large awkward things across the city.

Now, what is the best way to go about putting this on the insurance? I was considering phrasing it something like "due to a change of circumstances, the vehicle will be kept on the street in Clifton for 10 weeks while visiting a friend, and I need to add another 2k miles on just to be safe". Any ideas?

Having got my original quote for home kept, 2k miles on ComparetheMarket, I ran an identical one with the details changed to 4k miles, kept on the street in a safe Bristol postcode and it went up to £1400. I therefore assume that to keep it in Bristol will cost somewhere between the 2, and closer to £800 than £1400? Could I also use the quote as leverage in case they try to charge more than this?

Any advice would be welcome!

How about making a phone call to your current insurers, explaining the change in circumstances and seeing what they say in return. Is it really that difficult that you need to ask?

Oh FFS, I was asking because I've never had to do this before and wanted advice on what to say/what not to say lest i do something to fk up my policy. And if you read it, the change is temporary not permanent, so I was also asking if I'd have to ring back at the end of 10 weeks or whether they would revert if I told them to.

Ring them, explain your last post. They are human and it will be fine.

A student who drives a £5k vehicle with high insurance group and has a steam traction thing at £5k?

Well good for you matt, most students struggle to pay their rent! (Or it's daddy's vehicle)

I reckon your friend will be sick of you well before 10 weeks is up. Do they know you're staying that long?

Right, well I've just rung the insurers. They said that they cannot insure the car for 10 weeks at my friends address, it has to be somewhere that I am resident. This kinda puts the kibosh on my plans then because I live in a tower block next to Broadmeads shopping centre - somewhere that doesn't exactly have parking. I told the bird on the phone to try with that BS1 postcode and the caveat it would be a near as I can get to that address (expecting an astronomical price) and was told that it would only cost an extra £130... to go from garaged overnight in a class B postcode in the country to on the street overnight as close as I can get to a big towerblock in an E* postcode. I'm sceptical here?

In the meantime... cany anyone think of somewhere around Marlborough Street Bristol with free parking that doesnt need a residents permit?
