After a drive, I noticed a strange burning plastic smell and found that a plastic bag had wrapped itself around the exhaust and melted. So, I pulled and scrapped off whatever I could, but still have some shiny remnants on the exhaust pipe.

Thoughts on how to get it off.
Wire brush, easier when hot? poisonous gases from burning plastic?

Short of replacing the exhaust pipe there isn't a lot more you can do. frown

If you've got the loose bits off I wouldn't worry about what's left - it will quickly burn off pretty harmlessly I'd have thought.

A friends car caught fire because of this once, Luckily he was parked up so we noticed and put it out before any real damage was done.

I'd try wired brush when cold. When it's hot you'll likely just spread it and gum up the brush. It's never happened to me before, but it is one of my many irrational fears :-/

Had this happen to me - just took what I could off and let it burn off - didn't take long.

Not sure if the gasses affected me....much.

It'll burn off pretty thoroughly over time. As for gas being released, well most of it is gone by now and if you're driving around, it's not going to trouble you much evil

Go for another nice long drive it'll soon burn off, you may smell it for a while yet though.

If your brave enough you could even try finding a field with some long grass, it works wonders with mud and dog st on boots so why wouldn't it with plastic bags and exhausts hehe

I suggest this is moved to the Caterham forum

As caterham owners have a wide area of experience on the stuff stuck to the exhaust issue

Plastic bag is not a large problem

Pheasant guts, now they pong

Warm/hot exhaust and a metal scraper have had to do this a few times with the bike then a wet scourer to get the tiny bits off mind you plastic bags are alot more preferable than dead squirrels
