The x300 has an oil leak down the back of the engine block, which, upon inspection, looks like it might be coming from under what I think is the rocker cover (the silver cover with Jaguar written on it in this photo:

The car has done 155k miles and is starting to use a bit of oil (1l every 2-3k miles). The back of the engine block is shiny with the leak, but there's nothing accumuating on the drive, yet.

Could this be the early indications of HGF? there's no mayonnaise in the oil / oil in the coolant yet, but I'd like to get it fixed and avoid destroying the engine. If it went I'd have to write the car off and I very much want to avoid that.

If it's not HGF, shoud I be worried? I've got it booked for a service so can get them to address it but would like an idea of the likely causes / solutions to avoid the swift inhalation of breath through closed teeth that might arise when the friendly mechanic looks at it.

Ok - thanks. Is it easily fixable? It's definitely got worse over the last 5-10 miles for so.

it depends where the leak is coming from its the rocker cover its a very easy fix. also most of these cars at that milage will leak a bit of oil unless you see a pool of oil under the car i wouldnt bother just keep an eye on the level and top it off
