which AV reciever - Ps3, Sky, apple TV?
Discussion
ok, after a few new purchases over the christmas i have some components that i want to run through a system. my TV speakers are pants so need your help.
i have the following i want to hook up:
Ps3 (optical out only i think)
Apple TV (optical out only)
Sky HD box (multiple outs)
i have a nice set of B&W floor speakers which will do the job that are hooked into my stereo system (which i'll be getting rid of now i can stream to the apple TV)
so, whats a good mid-range Av reciever to use for the job? is that the only way to do it?
basically, any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you not use HDMI on all of those?
I have a Denon 1910 (old model) with some B&W which works great for me.
I also considered an Onkyo. As always get down to Richer or similar and see what they have, get it set up and see if you like the sound.
If you go into Richer and ask about any amp, they'll try and sell you an Onkyo.I have a Denon 1910 (old model) with some B&W which works great for me.

Sorry to sound like such a noob but if i run all of them into a reciever with HDMI - is there HDMI out on the reciever into the tv?
Its been a few years since i have set anything up.
Yes, it's really simple these days. HDMI carries audio and video, so it's multiple HDMI in and a single HDMI out. I don't know anything about Apple TV, but the PS3 and the Sky box should connect to the amp with HDMI.Its been a few years since i have set anything up.

For £200 you can get a Denon AVR1713.
I avoid using Richer Sounds these days. The last two times I've been there, trying to buy stuff based on magazine reviews they've tried their hardest to sell me something I didn't want.
I went there to buy a specific Denon AV amp that they had sat on the shelf, but they just wouldn't give me a price for it. The sales guy said I should buy an Onkyo as Denon amps produce a noisy picture. He also said that the magazine AV reviewers never actually listen to these amps, so their ratings were useless. I just had to walk out in the end.

The Stockport branch of Richer Sounds used to be real tI avoid using Richer Sounds these days. The last two times I've been there, trying to buy stuff based on magazine reviews they've tried their hardest to sell me something I didn't want.

ts at this. Amazingly patronising, so much so that I stopped going there. The north Manchester one was much better.I once went into the Stockport branch for some massive Mission floorstanders that were half price at £100. I wasn't expecting quality, but I knew they'd do the job. The idiot told me they were only good enough for a child's bedroom! He tried selling me a set of their own brand for about £250.
I wanted to punch the idiot. The speakers were great. I've still got them.
Just do your research and ignore the "experts".

The 3 best deals at RS currently IMO are the Sony 820 at £180, Denon 2113 at £250 and the Sony 1030 at £300.
Depends on what features you want and at what price point you won't be disappointed by any of those 3. The Denon will be warmer and the Sony slightly brighter.
The 1030 has wifi which is very handy, the Denon may sound the best for music and also has Apple Airplay but not wifi. The 820 is pretty good as you could stream your music through the PS3 anyway.
You don't have to take any notice of the RS staff, if you call to reserve what you want and turn up with the cash, then you're out in 30 seconds.

I'd go with Denon as well
I've got a AVR-1912 and its a brilliant piece of kit
As has been mentioned, make sure that with whatever you buy, you can assign an optical input to a HDMI input as you'll need this for Sky.
Make sure its HDMI 1.4 (futureproof)
Another feature i wanted was hdmi passthrough on standby. That way, i could still watch Sky on the TV without needing the amp actually turned on.
