Lost one of ours as well in November.
Only 6
He'd ruptured a disc about a year before and had the material removed and made a full recovery.
He did the next disc along in October.
Couldn't face putting him through all the aggro again, so after a couple of weeks cage rest to see if he stabilised (he actually deteriorated) we had to make the painful decision to have a young and otherwise healthy dog put to sleep.
Not to mention £5k to operate.
Sad times for us and the kids, but we've still got the one mini wire whose 14 now and a couple of mini schnauzers who are 3 and 1

i have a mini smooth who is now about 18 months old... he leaps off sofas and beds, climbs the stairs and comes back down again (although he does this sideways now dropping his front legs and then his back legs down each step), and i just know that he will not be able to do that forever, but i'm not sure how i can stop him.
he has his own sofa in the kitchen with a set of fleecy-lined steps which is where he hangs out during the day, but he is so full of energy, he just doesn't understand how fragile he is.
Will have a look to see if I can find the breeder in London we got ours from. We have had our miniture wirehaired Daushund, Frankie (also known as Mr Poo) 11 years. He also ruptured a lower back disc 5 years ago which was operated on at AHT in Newmarket. All went OK and today he is about 95% on his back legs. 1 Month after his back disc went, one slipped in his neck but after a scan was too difficult to operate on, so with some medication and rest it settled itself. Fingers crossed he has been OK since but can just about manage jumping up the back door step - still runs around like a loony tho !!

to as she runs Dachshund rescue, 01458850745, lovely lady helped us get our first couple and sadly had to help us re home them too! Long story!!!
Seems to link to this.http://www.miniaturedachshundclub.co.uk/dachshund_...
I have book marked it for future reference.
Try Ian Seath, at Sunsong, Zena Thorn-Andrews at Drakesleat or maybe Gill Key who runs the Lafora info website (a genetic condition that wires are prone to).... Ian would be a good person to speak to. Good luck!
P.s. we have a great Dachshund network on Facebook called Dachshunds Anonymous with 500 owners - you may get some good recommendations from there
Sorry to hear that some people have lost dogs recently - I don't know how you get through that
There is a new book out about Dachshund spine health if anyone is interested let me know and I will dig out the link

This is going to be really random but I'd not heard of so this type of epilepsy so I thought I'd look it up, inadvertently I think I've just diagnosed it in my parents elderly poodle. He fits all of the behaviours being described. I've just contacted my vet. Not that there is much we can do now (except maybe his diet, though he"s a fussy bugger!) as he is 16 now and it is progressing slowly. I thought it was because he had poor sight that caused his jerky behaviour in daylight/ sunlight!bexVN said:
