Which digital camera

Evening all.

I want a new camera, one that does everything for me. I want to point it at something and press a button and the camera works everything out and makes everything I do worthy of a Pulitzer prize.

I don't mind having to turn the flash on.

Budget £100.

AA would be preferable, but not essential.
SD would be preferable, but not essential.

I'm open to anything really, I'm just looking for recommendations for the best camera I could get within budget (ish) bearing in mind my photography skills, which are pretty much limited to point, click and hope.

Well as an attempt at a constructive answer, Panasonic always seem well regarded. So I'd go and order £100-worth of Panasonic. You'll get more for your money if you buy an outgoing model. Go for Li-ion batteries if possible.

As a generalisation this may well be true, but there are 2 key factors in my case. One being my existing camera really is a piece of crap, and the other being my wife who will also use it an who really does need a point and click.

If you want AA batteries look at the Canon Powershot range.

but I'm sure there will be also be some recently replaced models around at discounted sale prices too at various retailers.

I note they still do one at the lesser end of the range with an optical viewfinder or sorts if you are not always comfortable using the screen to see what you may be shooting.

Off topic, but what's the attraction of AA batteries?

I find I only need to charge my DSLR batteries once every thousand shots or so, which certainly feels like it's massively outlasting anything I've ever used AA batteries for.

DLSRs are not an issue mostly - though it depends on how much you are demanding from the battery.

My 400D gives about 400-500 shots per charge using a manual lens (ie. - no lens power consumption).

My 1D3 (much bigger battery) about 2000+ shots.

Pocketable stuff has always been a different matter - 150 shots has traditionally been quite a good number. So the convenience of being able to run off a couple AAs rather than have to carry a charger and find a power outlet can be strong - especially if, say, hiking for a few days and so on.

A DSLR with a power grip might offer the same options of course. The grips usually (I think) have adapters for running of a number of AA batteries should the need arise.

Save your money - stick to the one on your iPhone 4/4S/5 or Sony Xperia/Samsung G2/3.
I seriously doubt that a £100 new camera will better that which is installed in decent mobile phones these days.

If you want to play the pre-owned game, then look for something 3-4 year old that was £300-400 new.
Mind you, chances are most that fit that criteria will likely be Lithium Ion based, but there's nothing to stop you buying another battery or two, and charging them all up before heading off - and you can get 3rd party offerings with a higher capacity than the manufacturer fitted due to cost or max capacity for same volume at the time.

Fuji, Sony, Panasonic would be what I'd be looking at.

That was what I was going to say until I took a quick look at what was available.

The one I linked to looks pretty decent, with the main advantage over phones being a decent optical zoom.

I've had two Ixus... (Ixii??), first one got destroyed with sand by my daughter, not the camera's fault.

I think they are well made and seem pretty well specced.

You won't win any Pulitzer prizes, and it's crap at taking anything moving fast, but for that money it's pretty good. It'll do all the thinking for you.

Nip into Jessops, look at their pre owned stuff, may get some bargains there, and some good advice.
