Hey guys

So I have been looking to get myself my first car. My first choice is a Corsa and whilst talking to a few of my mates they told me that the 1.8i 16V SRi can do 0-60 in 8 seconds. Which sounds a bit off to me. Is this true? If not, how fast does it do 0-60 in?

Thanks in advance smile

That's about right, not gonna be pricy to insure as a first car though?

19 years old, been driving for a year and a half. Tbh I wasn't even considering that, I was looking at 1.2. I did a few quotes and it will be £700 for insurance and about £1500 to £2000 for the car. Not too shabby considering I was being quoted £550 for a 1.2 corsa.

Was just curious really, not sure if I will pick it up for just go with the 1.2 as the difference is 15mpg and not sure if it is worth the extra cost as I do bout 20 miles of city driving a day.

EDI: by first car I meant my own. Was on parents insurance since I passed my test.

Given its your first car, look for spec, toughness and low insurance rather than 0-60 times.

Then when you have a few years NCB behind you, chase the performance options smile

See my post above mate, apologies on my end as I should have explained my situation better.

19 years old, been driving for a year and a half on my parents insurance. Got quoted £700 a year insurance for the 1.8i 16V SRi.

Do you know, the X Type is cheaper to insure than a diesel Rover? 240hp with a 0-60 in 6.6, vs 99hp / 9.9 seconds. Buy an old Jag!

Sounds interesting, will definitely look into it, cheers smile

Only concern is the cost of running an old Jag. I assume it would be expensive and not sure about its mpg either?

If the difference in insurance is only a few hundred quid then getting a 1.8 over a 1.2 wins hands down in my opinion.

Little fun to be had in a 1.2, plenty in a warm hatch.

This interests me, as I can't get quotes below £1k on the 1.4 version with 0 ncd at 25 with a licence for 7 years. Who's giving you the £700 quote?

Will need to ring the to confirm as it is a online quote, but I am sure that as long as everything I put on it is correct, it shouldn't change.

Yes it will do it in 8 seconds, possibly a bit quicker but it's three changes before 60mph so you are somewhat limited.

In relation to mpg, I usually get about 35mpg, however recently after moving to uni and doing 100% town driving I've had it as low as 21mpg.

Insurance tends to be quite good as they aren't in a particularly high group, for me when I was 19 and 2ncb it was £750, renewal in March looks to be about £550 and that's on my own policy.

it ain't always about the 0-60. i had a rover 200vi and mgf vvc, same engine, 0-60 7ish seconds, but the 200vi was not much fun on b roads and in the wet deadly, the mgf I much proffered the slower 1.8si engine.

same with golf gti 8 v over 16v.

Don't buy it on 0-60 this is usually a smaller percentage of driving time. Try to have a look at slower cars but better renowned chassis as the corsa wasn't know for fun handling.

Can't it hit 60 in 2nd? I remember just touching 60 in a hire astra 1.4 years ago in 2nd.

Agree that the 0-60 time isn't relevant real world but a 1.8 SRI will be lots faster than a 1.2.

I'm not a fan of Corsa in general, I always found the seats uncomfortable, however if the OP wants a Corsa, a 1.8 is preferable.

Online quotes usually stay the same, if they have a website and you can buy online then you ensure it stays the same. I always thought when you called them they were just putting details into a system like the website you use at home.
