Where's My Tracker?

It might sound a bit stupid but I can't find the Tracker that my car is allegedly fitted with. It's a 996 C2 Cabriolet and I can't find the damn thing. Doesn't help that I don't know what it looks like

Any ideas anyone? Where is a good hiding place for it?

Isn't that the whole point ? If the 'world' knew where it was would be a simple matter to disable on theft surely ?

I think I might keep its location quiet even if I knew ;-) Forums have ears....

I've a tracker on mine, no idea where it's fitted but know I can call a number and have its operation checked and they will confirm back with the cars location.

Hi Rob 100% of a trackers effectiveness is the fact that it can't be found. If we posted the locations of tracker fitments that undermines the whole system and puts us all in trouble.

Sorry I can't help but as you coud probably guess I'm not anonymous and would be struck off if I divulged the information. The only people who know are tracker and the guy who fitted it.

I can't answer your quiestion (really can't), but I gather they're only fitted in one of a very few number of places. Think about it; most installers are going to select similar locations every time.

I was told there were 10's of locations on porkers ......

As an aside, I've had real time trackers fitted to our works vans and you would not believe how small they are now, so easy to conceal....

I'm looking for it as it doesn't appear to be active and I'm not paying someone a handful of folding just to come and half rip my car apart only to tell me that there isn't one on it. I appreciate that giving away the hiding locations of Trackers on a public forum is a bit counter productive but a PM would be nice. A bit of a clue on what the damn thing looks like would be a start

Do you not have facility to call into tracker company and check it s functioning ? Understood this was offered by all major insurances approved trackers ? As mentioned, it is on mine and I check it after every service etc to ensure its not been disconnected etc

If its supposed to have Tracker ie the brand Tracker your best bet is to find a local dealer who can interrogate the unit remotely via an ITU.

Tracker monitor fitted in most older cars is not active until switched on in the event of a theft, they will not activate without a police crime reference so just calling and saying can you activate to test is not an option. That's why it's location is to be kept secrets we don't even tell the customer where it's fitted on any paperwork if will only give a location code nothing else.

An engineer with an ITU is THE ONLY way to test finding the unit will tell you nothing sorry

Well for my tracker ( insurance approved) they provide you with facility to call in to check it is working.
, they respond with cars current location, which is what i do. Great for piece of mind.

Based upon last ignition cycle. Quite useful.....

Are trackstars's unique in offering this facility and real time tracking ?

I have the registration certificate some details of the registration from the previous owner. What is the lifespan of these things and I assume they can go wrong.

I've called Tracker and they can re-activate the subscription for £149.00 PA. The trouble is that they, and I, have no idea whether it is still fitted and whether it works so they want an additional £99 for an audit to check it. This is optional but if I don't do the audit and it isn't there or does't work then I may as well burn £150 and save myself the effort.

Are there any options for a 3rd party/independent to verify if the tracker fitted and working?

Surely they can do a remote test? I.e. they can remotely ping your unit and if it's working it will tell the operator roughly where in the country you are. If this is correct then you can safely say it's on and working.

I think the £99 thing might be for them to come and inspect the unit, and probably fit a new battery or something? I'd phone them back and ask them to test it remotely for free and then sign up.

You asking for someone to rip into your car so you can "look at it" is a total red herring IMO. You don't need to "see it" to see if it's working, indeed what would looking at it actually tell you other than that it's present? Doing a remote test to see if their network picks it up is FAR more effective as it tells you if it's not only installed but also working.

Finally, even if you do have to pay the tracker co £99 to do the tests for you this will STILL be cheaper and more effective than asking a 3rd party/independent to do whatever you want with it.

In short, I don't see a legit reason to want to get physically at it to verify it's working, as this can be done remotely.

In which case, I wouldn't bother at all. Just insure it without, at least you know 100% you will be covered for theft if the tracker fails/is not there etc.

I had the same question when I bought my car last year, I called Tracker and they interrogated the unit remotely and even told me the battery condition. They did initially say they wanted to come and do the audit to confirm the battery was OK, but they could do it remotely in the end. Like everyone says above, they can tell you this remotely without a need to come and inspect your car...
