Heard about this event on radio York today, said 8pm this friday. Been meaning to go for ages.

Just wondering if anyone has any more details as the internet is saying nothing?

For those unaware Dalby forest is one of the best places in the UK to view stars (something to do with the location and orientation of the valley). They shut the lights off at the visitors centre to achieve total darkness. Every so ofen there are free (I think) events with a guide.

I've been to one, expect lots of families and kids, but the guys running it know their stuff and are very happy to share their knowledge. Best of all, its free (or it was when I did it).

I recomend food at the Fox and Rabbit beforehand.

Edit, these guys run it: http://www.scarborough-ryedale-as.org.uk/saras/

Was doing a bit of stargazing last night looking for these shooting stars and saw bugger all. Had about 20 minutes from 10pm with all the lights off staring straight in to the Quadraceps area and it just made me sleepy. May have another go tonight if it's clear. I'm off the grog so it helps me sleep as well!

I recommend booking it too! New Years Eve in the Fox and Rabbit was lovely.

Best place I've ever looked at stars was in a little village in the south of France. Stayed in a little villa and on a night on the balcony you could literally see thousands of them, you don't realise how crowded the sky is and how many there are until you see them like that. It's the first and only time I've seen a shouting star too.

Saw lots of Stars.

Interesting evening, though I must admit I've forgotten most of what was said. I might be able to find Polaris now and I definitely know the big streak in that picture is Jupiter.

Looks interesting will have to keep an eye out for a future one.

Best place I have ever been for looking at the sky (and this is a great excuse) is the Nurburgring. We were there this year and had fantastic clear weather and the sky was completely full of starts/constellations which coming from just outside two Cities was a rare treat. Having someone there to explain what stuff was would have been great you could spend literally hours just looking.

I'm sure the starts were a lot more round when we were there!

I must admit I'm not massively interested in constellations but the view was mightily impressive. We took a walk away from the visitors centre and with your night vision fully adapted it was beautiful!

Any idea if they let people take their bikes and go into the forest a bit to get away from everyone else? I bet there's an amazing view from the top.

Nothing to stop you that I could see, we drove up after an hour or so to get away from the others. The gates were open and the Toll machine inactive.
