In the other thread, following 999 vehicles through a town is a bit naughty, but what about on a motorway?

A while back I was driving along the motorway in not too heavy traffic, outside lane overtaking, at around 65 mph.

Police car appears behind, so pull over to let it past, then pull back out again behind it.

As the police car was catching up to slower outside lane hoggers and having to slow down again, I was able to hang on his rear - still a safe distance behind and still below the speed limit. The police car was proving to be very handy for clearing the outside lane for me.

I got a finger wag from the officer inside, but I wasn't doing anything illegal surely?

I soon got seperated from him when an r sole traveling at 45, pulled out straight after the police car passed him, straight into my path and cut me up.

So, cheeky but illegal?

Not technically illegaly, but you lay yourself open to two things..

Firstly, if one of the other cars were to return to lane three and collide with you, there might be a good arguement for you driving without due care and attention.

Secondly, you invite all sorts of road rage, the very thing that normal people wish to avoid.

I think this must be the first time I query one of your posts! Firstly, why would the driver in lane 3 be charged w/o DC&A if someone looking to overtake moves into lane 3 without checking for traffic? Surely it's the numpty who moved without looking in the mirror who should get pulled.

Secondly, he's doing nothing wrong (Assuming driving at or below speed limit and at a reasonable distance). Why would this cause road rage? It's not "unfair" in the way that, say, the same situation would be on a crowded two-lane road.

Hi Whoozit..

Firstly I'm pleased that my previous posts have been warmly welcomed..

With this one, I think you've hit it on the head with the speed and distance quote. I'm guessing (and I've been known to be wrong many times ) that our fried was more than likely travelling at less than normal breaking distance between him and the emergency vehicle.

Having travelled in such an emergency convoy many times, I'm all too aware that people only ever expect one emergency vehicle and often pull back into their space cutting the second vehicle up.

Hope that makes more sense..

Hi Street

When travelling behind, I observed a two second gap which sometimes got a bit bigger as the police car hit pockets of empty motorway. Traffic would then slow them down and I would catch up again.

Thing is though, as I was travelling in thier wake, I was able to maintain 65-70mph while the traffic that had pulled over had slowed right down to 45ish.

The only way I got away with it at all was because of this difference in speed.

I was waiting for someone to cut me up so drove accordingly and when it did happen, I was able to pull up in time.

What I found strange was that the outside lane hoggers that pulled over for the police car, all returned back to the outside lane oncew past, but made no effort to make progress, despite the carraigeway now being clear.

Hiya Byff

Thanks for the explanation mate. I didn't think you'd have done anything too wrong. However, lots do, a few feet from the bumper of ambulances in and out of traffic, you wouldn't believe it.

Anyway..glad you enjoyed the open passage...(finar finar)..
