What is wrong with this picture?

Every year I instruct my mum to get her oil service done and then i replace and service the none messy bits. Its just not worth the hassle when you can get a oil service with quality oil for under 40 quid.

However this morning when went round to change the other bits, i was met with this mess upon opening the bonnet. She had driven about 10 miles i think with it like this.

Maybe next year i am going to have to do it myself after all.

I think it will have something to do with that little black cap next to the wiper arm. Plus the moss next to the other wiper arm nut ( sorry) couldn't resist.

Good job she only drove a short distance.

It's just a larger than usual crankcase ventilation method. And no catch tank to empty smile

Had the cap been left off or was it replaced with that cable pinched into it?

Oil filler cap not replaced after the service, and left on the scuttle tray? Oil thrown all round the engine bay?

So you'll be taking these photos to the garage that did the service and giving them an almighty bking, I hope?

I know of a PHer who thought he had a wheel bearing failure, as a vicious vibration set up in one of the rear wheels when going down the dual carriageway, so bad he couldn't continue. He discovered at the roadside that all of the wheel nuts on one rear wheel were only finger tight, the car having been in the garage that week. Unbelievable, and fking dangerous too.

Always put the filler cap in the space where the bonnet latches, then it's impossible to close the bonnet without replacing it first!

This is why my first car will be one I can work on myself. I know how good the standard of my own work is.

I drove an RAF 8 Tonner from the Borders to Wroughton, near Swindon, without the oil filler cap. I'd forget to put it back on after I'd topped up the oil before setting off.

That was a long journey at no more than 50mph......

It survived the return journey as well yikes

I know a few people who've done the same with the coolant expansion tank. That doesn't normally end very well.

Your mum bought a citreon diesel. Did she explain why? Joke aside that is shocking, was it an indie or main dealer?

Has anything been said yet? If so what did they say?

I've done that, then driven 10 miles at 70+ mph. Pulled into a drive-thru and it started steaming as we left. Rather luckily no damage was done but I do double check now hehe

Bravo to all you keen sighted phers who correctly spotted that the oil cap had been left off.

I rang the branch and spoke to the service manager. He told me if i bring it in they will happily replace any lost oil etc. I explained that the oil level was just about registering on the bottom of the dipstick so driving it 8 miles back to them wasn't the brightest of ideas. He agreed to pay for any oil and to have it cleaned. Very apologetic and promised that the "technician" would pay for the remedial work.

I drove into town and picked up some oil and topped it up. Then got the engine bay cleaned out. £25 in total. My mum is going down there tomorrow with the receipts to claim the costs back as they agreed.

Its a nation-wide tyre and service company.

That last part probably explains it!

I had one of those garages that are nation wide do an MOT on my MR2 many moons ago. I thought it would be cheaper as they are just around the corner from where I work. Apparently it failed because the handbreak wasnt working at all (I lived on a 45 degree hill at the time) and it needed 4 new calipers for £2500! Told them to do one, dropped the car into my normal garage who confirmed I needed the handbreak cable tightened and new pads on the front. Cost me £60 plus retest.

boxedin I may have once driven a Sierra 200+ miles with the coolant tank cap off, didn't lose any water (no idea how!). The car was absolutely fine.

several years ago got the o/h to take the car in to a well known tyre/brake place to have new front brake discs put on an old VW polo, a week later when checking tyre pressures notice discs look a bit scored. take wheel off and sure enough disc is V rusty (much more than surface rust)and there is a significant lip where the pads have worn the dics, I.E the disc hadn't been changed (same on other side)!! I asked O/H "did you get the brake discs done last week" answer - "yes here is the reciept".
we took car back to the tyre place and they agreed that the discs hadn't been done, think they made some excuse about an apprentice doing it. we did get some freebies but can't remember what, it was several years ago.

I have to confess I did something similar after topping up the oil on my Z3. boxedin The car didn't seem to be going very well (it's a 3.0 so usually pulls well), so when I got home I went and got my laptop and read the error codes. There were quite a few codes (mostly to do with exhaust sensors being out of range) which was a bit worrying, as previously it hadn't any. Eventually I thought I'd open the bonnet and look for anything obvious and found the filler cap on top of the engine and a bit of an oil slick too. boxedin Reset the codes and refit the filler cap and all was well again...

Much can depend on the location of the hole in relation to the engine moving parts, and how near the bonnet is.

I drove an old 4x4 to the alps and back with the cap missing.
When I checked the oil it was still full and there was only the smallest of marks on the bonnet lining.

Then again when I left the cap off an old pug the oil warning light came on within 5 miles and the engine bay was covered in the stuff.
