"merge in turn" - how many "turns" do you allow?
Discussion
Yeah, I know, "Not this s
t again" but every time this comes up for discussion on here, the consensus seems to be "idiot sheep in lane 1 are there too early and it's their fault for not leaving spaces for lane 2 to merge", etc... The crucial point that appears to be ignore by the late lane 2 mergers society is that those in lane 1 will almost certainly already have merged in turn.
So, bearing in mind that the vast majority of those in lane 1 will have already "merged in turn" (but just a bit further back than you seem to want to), how many others do you propose is a reasonable amount to let in in front of them before the choke point? If, for argument's sake they let in a driver at 100m back, are you then proposing that they immediately back off enough space to allow the next person passing them in lane two to merge in as well? And if they do, do they then just repeat this procedure until they get to the front, or is their "obligation to leave enough space" over as soon as they've let one person in?
I'd seriously like to hear the answer from those who think there is some random point of existence that allows those driving to the front of the queue in lane 2 to perpetually have the "merge in turn" right even if the person they wish to merge in front of has already let in 1, 2, 3 or many more late mergers. What is the limit? Is there a limit? Are those who happen to be in lane 1 eternally indebted to lane 2 users who merge at the last possible moment and must yield regardless?
And you cannot see the logic in someone pulling out into lane 2 (while holding position with the gap in lane 1 they merged into originally) to stop those of you that wish to drift by as if it is your birthright to forego your designated merge position some distance back up the carriageway because you thought, "f
k that, there's a few metres of unused tarmac matey, I'm claiming my right to drive on that and woe betide you if you try and stop me!"? When doing so means that those in lane 1 (WHO HAVE ALREADY MERGED IN TURN) don't have to keep giving way to those of you that think it's ok to keep driving past and choosing your own arbitrary merging point? When those that do pull out to stop you driving past actually help the situation by moving he merge point back up towards the choke point?

Merge in turn works fine when both lanes are moving but when L1 is stationary or crawling...? Just interested in how many times those in L1 should let in L2 mergers.
I let one car in and expect the same if I am doing the merging, that's how it's supposed to work, if I don't get let in when it's my turn to merge I'm coming in anyway, whether I'm given space or not
F
On the bike - I don't merge with anyone. I just find my way at the front every time - normally a long way in front from the merge point!

So do I in the car.

This works best if you have a cheap battered Volvo or snotter. If you have something flash and you are "up against" barry in his works van, he might just call your bluff!

Moving from L2 to L1 at Anything less than 100 yards from the lane closure point is a failure.
When someone tells me I've broken a law by not sitting in an imaginary queue I'll conform to sheep like behaviour, until then f

i had this problem recently where was some flooding on the inside lane on a dual carrage way so it was closed.
i was in the outside, and many of the careful drivers on the inside lane were merging nice and early at 600 400 and 200 yards, problem was that would leave the inside lane clear again, and some of the drivers would decide to push on a little more, a good 3x as much traffic was funnelling though the inside lane just because people thought they were doing the right thing by merging early instead of at the end, i've found when they close the outside lane this happens much less, whicch is why when ever they can they tend to merge the outside lane into the inside lane first, even if it's the inside lane that will actually be closed, but in this case it was unscheduled and they didn't have the chance to put that in place
