Shackleton's Epic Crossing

It's the 100th anniversary of Shackleton's 800 mile voyage in a 22 foot lifeboat in some jolly inclement weather and not much of a picnic to go around, across Antarctic waters.

There is now a recreation of the journey being attempted.

That would make a great TV programme, hopefully a proper one on BBC HD and not Quest (ie shot on VHS with 5 mins of adverts every 6 mins). It makes a refreshing change from marathons etc.

For authenticity of course they should do it by the stars only, but no doubt they will have GPS and laptops up to the eyeballs, and a chase boat and helicopters crammed with back-up bods.



NB: There's a boat called James Caird on the Great Ouse, but not the original!

Watching Shackleton as I type, by the way. Brilliant film, up there with Mill's Scott of the Antarctic.

An aside, but Shackleton's South with photographs by Frank Hurley still makes astonishing reading; recommended.

I've a separate volume of Hurley's work and it's just gobsmacking what these men went through and survived.

Shackleton is one of my heroes.

I'll catch up with this thanks for the heads up...

never lost a man on an expedition to my knowledge...didn't get as for as Scott or Amundsen but didn't lose a man...Leadership.
