Has anyone gone this route?. Having never driven a GT3 I'm wondering how much better/faster etc. it would be over a C2S? Also interested in how it would compare to a 997 Turbo.

You'll find that a few of us on here have made the leap.

Yes it's faster when fully extended, makes a noise to die for, has amazing brakes, is more stable at speed, grips harder and finds more traction from it's standard fit LSD.

However, it's much noisier, has a stiffer ride, a heavier clutch, heavier gearshift and because it sits so much lower - you have to watch for speedbumps. Also there is no PSM on the Gen1 ....

I love mine and have brought it into work on the first dry day for weeks. cloud9

I did ! Always wanted a 911 so after a divorce and getting into my mid 40s I bought a 2005 997 C2s in 2011. Great car but after nine months I bought a 997.1 GT3.It has the clubsport pack,PCCB,Nav & air con & not much else!
Drove over to the Old Timers GP last August and on the open Autobahns They do go like stink. The C2s was quick but the way the GT3 just keeps pulling is another thing.
All I can say if you havnet yet driven one do so.

Mark has nicely summed it up. In fact it feels much noisier than my GT2 - not just revs, but general noise from everywhere!

Its the turn-in which I just love though - its fantastic, its not wite an Exige, but its much sharper than any other Porsche I have had.

It is nothing at all like a Turbo. The way the power come in is just so different and the relatively softly sprung 4wd means they are worlds apart from a GT3. Each has its merits but they are very very different indeed.

I did it (via an Exige S) and would confirm that Mad Mark has pretty much summed it up.

Unfortunately the GT3 ground clearance difference, means you can use it in less places though, so it's not nearly as good in town.
