I had an idea on this thread...

http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

...comparing the work of Jamie Shaw with the holocaust from an automotive history point of view. I'm actually looking at an National Lottery Heritage Grant to get it started and Isopon to sponsor the running of it.

What cars would you feature in the Museum of Automotive Atrocity and why?

Here are few I'd select.

This is not another "badly modified cars" thread, the cars you highlight here have to be so bad putting them in a museum will not only make the roads a safer place but set a shining example to the next generation of car builders and modifiers not to make the same mistakes.

My reason for selecting the Morris Minor "Surfmobile" being; like all the Pimp my Ride UK cars all the extra weight with the stupid wheels, four inch spacers, stereo and so on are put on a completely standard platform. I doubt the steering box, suspension and drive train could take that amount of tat for very long. If the car was done properly with chassis and component upgrades to suit, it would be an awesome bit of kit. As it is sadly; it's a cosmetic exercise in cutting corners. Sure it looks nice by the Pimp my Ride standard but it would fall apart and ultimately anyone inspired by it would be wasting their time and money trying to achieve the same result. frown

No steering box on a Minor, they use a rack. Of course the other steering components may not like those big alloys so your point is valid. Is it trunnions that wear out on Minors if not looked after, bet they'd fail in double quick time on that one. But I do quite like how it looks - apart from those wheels. Just needs some steel wheels, maybe with slightly wider rims than standard but no need to go huge.

Not any more.

Martin Kemp absolutely hated the car as soon as it was 'presented' to him and made his feelings quite public.

He hated it so much in fact, that he got rid of it as soon as possible to Coys, who in turn sold it for free (no commission) to the organisers of a car show to destroy, with the proceeds going to charity.

If you have time, read the thread: http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=5175...

It details the purchase, examination and destruction Mr Kemp's "Gangster Car".

What they found upon purchasing was shocking. It should never have been allowed on the road.

Then you should've said in your OP that you were including them because you know these individual cars are poorly engineered - we've got no way of telling that by looking at a picture.

Sorry I took for granted that people were unaware of the build quality. Most of the made for TV deadline builds are a cosmetic enhancement over cost compromise. Look at the Classic Car Rescue series. Not one of those should be on the road (with the exception of the Mustang that wasn't as bodged) without being ripped apart and restored properly. Still they look good for camera and that's all that matters.

I actually quite like the Panda, and I had to stare hard at the third one to figure out whether it was a Fiesta or a Clio (rear pillars gave it away, and then I saw the sign at the front - D'oh!)

The XJS is hilarious.

I don't think there's much wrong with these as they are a bit of fun.

I recognise that blue/green thing.

Was it on Top Gear a few years ago hill climbing against some old boys in a proper car?

I didn't know any of those cars were from TV programmes - I suspect I'm not alone. smile

Don't get me wrong.......I can imagine what is right and what isn't.......
I just like the concept......and, if I could afford to do one properly, it would make a cracking alterative to a Lister Le Mans !!

I lived through the 70s so so some real atrcities but this was the one I hated most - "Transformation" - sh*t colours, stupid fastback van concept and I recall it had square headlamps. It was plain wrong from every angle.

This was the other one - Fantasia Capri custom with a beer barrel fuel tank. Nasty. I think this still survives locally.
