So this was filmed near where I grew up: http://m.stv.tv/news/208403-footage-of-seven-year-...

The thing is, there's a well known place near Fraserburgh where parents often take their kids to learn to drive which is off the road and very safe. Idiots...

I wouldn't mess with a 7 year old fae the broch.

Pretty good driving though. Better than my 8 year old. Personally I wouldn't let my daughter drive on a public highway, she drove the integrale at knockhill in the car park at the age of 4. Nowhere near as good as this girl.

They grow up fast in the 'Broch.

I think I was about ten when grandad taught me to drive the old Montego up Tenby beach all by my self!
I always thought it made learning to drive on the road easy as I already new how to use a clutch and change gear on my very first lesson.
Looking back it was great fun but at the time I took it very seriously and I could barley depress the clutch fully smile

Driving along at no more than 10 miles and hour with the parent in full control of the pedals. I don't think it was dangerous at all.

I learnt to drive in a Mini van, chasing chickens around an orchard. When the grown-ups weren't looking we'd shoot up and down the lanes.

I was 9 (but this was in the past, its another country).

What an exaggeration.

She isn't 'driving a car' at all.

She is sitting on an adults lap whilst partially steering a car.

To be honest I don't consider that even slightly dangerous. The adult obviously has control of the motion of the vehicle.

When I was in primary school my dad would open the gate on our driveway that led into our field and let me drive his Escort van round it at tickover in 1st as I couldn't reach the pedals. He just told me to "turn the key off" if I thought I was going to hit something. He would put it in 1st and let the clutch out and then once it was moving just get out and shut the door.

I remember my dad doing the same with me but it was an old transit van in the late 70s.

Won't load but assuming it's as you describe and he can slam on if necessary it doesn't bother me either.

We have an old WW2 air field near us that had no gates stopping people entering it until the last few years.

My old man took me and my brother up there a few times to teach us the basics of driving. I was 10 and my brother was 14, what pissed my brother off was that I had better clutch control (probably due to me having to move my whole body to engage the clutch).

Didn't do us any harm and was good fun having a blat in his 306XSI.....well it was a company car wink

First car I 'drove' was an original Lotus 7 when I was around 8 or 9.

The actual problem nowadays with your kid sitting on your lap and steering is finding a car which doesn't have air bags. I imagine a bag going off could seriously damage a child.

Safety nazis. She's doing no more than walking pace and just doing the steering. It's not like she's got blocks of wood fastened to her feet like Short Round.

Someone should take one of those car driving dogs from the other weeks news story out for a drive around.
