Number plate on retention...

Hi,
I've got a plate on retention and need to check something out.
Do I have to send back the certificate I've already got to renew it for another XX months, OR do I get a new one through the post near renewal time that I tear off a slip and send back?
Done it for last 4 years and for the life of me I can't remember.
I ask as it could be a problem finding the current certificate :-(
