Spare wheel lowerer and raiser upper
Discussion
I had my first flat tyre in years on my Sport the other night (blimmin pot holes!). No issues with changing the wheel over to the full size spare - well looks like a Discovery wheel...(luckily I kept the owners manual in the car!). It was dark and wet at the time so rather than fumbling about in the mud and puddles putting the burst tyre wheel back up under the car it got lobbed in the boot and the cable raised back up to stop it dnagling around.
That was a couple of days ago - fast forward to today when I got the original wheel back on with new tyre and I couldn't lower the cable to install the spare back under the car. The nut in the boot is just turning away to itself without lowering or picking up the cable - about 2" cable showing. I took the unit off the car to see if I could fix it but looks like its an unserviceable item - the covers are riveted together than bolted...
Just wondering if I am doing something wrong or are these things breaking a common occurence? Or like me, up until 2 days ago, have you not used your yet?!
My car is just over 3yrs old now so there goes any warranty claim!

Drill the rivets out, mend it then rivet it (or use small bolts) back together?
I should add I've never seen one in the flesh, just pics, but what have you got to lose?
ETA are you pulling the cable whilst trying to unwind it as it may need that to stop it just unspooling inside the drum.

Yeah, my plan was to 'butcher' it before buying a new one, as you say nowt to lose...
I did try unspooling it weight assisted - it had the weight of my 3ton jack tied to it - no joy. When I had it on the bench I had my full body weight leaning off it (more than a spare wheel weight
) - still no joy...
Looks like a butchers then see if it is repairable...
