Scanning old negatives and slides

Have come across some family stuff that includes a number of negatives and slides from my childhood.

What the best way to do this? I'm happy to buy the hardware and then get rid of it once I'm done. Preference would be something you can load up and leave to do the rest as opposed to something labour intensive!

Is there anywhere in London who'll do this for you without needing a second mortgage?

I bought a reasonable Epson flatbed scanner which included a frame for slotting the slides into. It scans several at a time iirc. Results were pretty good considering the poor way they had been stored.

There are dedicated slide scanners too - if you just want to take a look at the pictures you can go for a £20 one which is "ok", but the colour balance will likely be a bit wrong so they won't be any use for printing out.
