Pre Purchase Inspection Sussex Area
Discussion
Hi All,
After a break from Porsches (964 & 993) for about 8 years, I have decided to now get a 3.4 Boxster 987 to use as a daily mode of transport covering around 12K miles per annum. I have seen one at a dealer in Sussex with 51K on the clock for £18K with a very good spec. He offers a "customer protect" warranty, but this is slightly putting me off buying the car as the 987 Boxster engine appears to be a bit fragile. Not to mention others things that could go wrong. I am still considering the car and am wondering if there is a company that can be recommended to do a pre purchase inspection in west Sussex? I have also seen another car at a OPC for £3K more with the benefit of a 2 year warranty which will presumably give me peace of mind should something go wrong. The spec is not so good, partial leather interior and fairly basic 18" wheels. The dealer that is selling the car with the customer protect warranty says the 2 year Porsche warranty is not as good as people make out and will also try and wriggle out should a claim arise.
Any advice will be appreciated.
James.

I'm not a fan of the Porsche used warranty due to the restrictions (OPC servicing, no mods). But having said that, I don't think the dealer is really being fair here - it is pretty comprehensive and if your engine went pop, then it is very very likely it would be covered.
For inspections, depends where in West Sussex - but nineexcellence in Horley near Gatwick would be worth a call regaring PPI.

The car is located in the Billingshurst area. Has anyone had experience of a Porsche centre carrying out the 111 point check, would this be more thorough than an independent garage? I wonder how easy it would be to obtain a Porsche warranty on a stand alone basis after 3 months of ownership on a 6 year old car?
Another recommendation for nineexcellence if you want PPI. Their hourly rate is low, they know their onions, they will see you right and be able to look after the car for you properly if you want them to if you do buy it. Get the car to them or pay them to go and inspect it, you won't regret it. They can't guarantee the IMS though, noone can do that! I was in a similar situation to you thinking about buying a 3.4 Boxster, seriously considered an RS60, then bought a 996 turbo and don't regret it.
PS, the selling dealer may tell you the OPC warranty is not good, but I think this is untrue, it is most likely far better than what he can provide. I wouldn't want OPC warranty, but that isn't because of the cover, it is purely because of the higher ongoing costs required to be compliant in the event of a claim.

If you are in the Billingshurst area you might want to talk to Paragon. I have never dealt with them but they have a good reputation and could probably do an inspection. The problem with inspections done by specialists however is persudaing the seller to allow the car to go to the specialist's premises.

99% sure paragon don't do PPI's as I seam to remember asking them when looking at the GT3JW1 said:

The 111 point inspection is very thorough, and has to be done ( and all faults rectified, including recalls) before they can apply the warranty. On a complex car like any porsche it is designed to offer a comfort factor. Often buying from an opc isnt that much more expensive initially, taking into account the value of the two year warranty that is included, but the dealer servicing costs for the next two years make up for it. Having said that it will make your car more attractive when the the time comes to move on .I asked previous owner of my 986S to take it to Parr, at my cost.
I specifically asked Parr about IMS Bearing failure and they can only say it is not making a noise now, no oil leaking from RMS, but who knows what might happen in the future.
Overall a good condition and mostly a well maintained car.
Previous owner was very impressed with Parr and knocked £500 off his asking price because of the things they found. So I got well over the cost of the inspection back.
However a few months later it nearly failed the MOT, so no guarantees!

Once you start limiting spec it takes time to find the right car, that said you have a right to be fussy as you are spending a lot of money. The right car will come be patient - took me 6 months to find mine.
OPC Mid Sussex is fantastic and if you call Service Manager Steven he will take care of you regarding inspection etc. a relationship with good OPC definitely helps when it comes to service work and warranty / goodwill claims.
If you don't intend to modify the car and use only Porsche parts then the extended warranty makes sense. Or you could be like me and not bother. Fortunate to have no problems in 3+ years though it had an oil leak when I bought it which was fixed under main warranty at 10 months old.
Make sure this car has Porsche only parts else any warranty claim you make could be void - e.g. Porsche battery, N rated tyres, and also full OPC history, with all services being done on time, plus NO recordings in the bad rev ranges.
Walk away if the car you are looking at doesn't check out 100%.
