My 944S2 Cabrio has had a non starting fault for a while. Occasionally the starter doesn't engage when the key goes to the "start" position- just silence, no click. Then again sometimes there IS a click! Then after another couple of tries, away she goes. It is as if the switch dosn't connect at the "start" position, ot the starter was stopped at a "neutral " point.
Now matters have escalated! After a flat (lack of use!)battery episode, the absolutely nothing at "start" occurred, with the occasional "click" then success! the starter engaged, but as the engine appeared to be about to start everything went dead as if there was a dead short. Trying again, the same sequence happened a couple of times! So I gave up before something drastic happened.
As a non related issue the heater fan appears to be running very slowly (much less than posn 1)when the ignition is turned on....leakage of current to the heater motor somehow?

Check the earth leads and starter leads are sound and secure first.

Thanks for the input. Is the starter solenoid on top of the starter? Are there any dreaded relays in the system?
I think the problem may be starter/ign switch related, but I'm more concerned with why everything "blacked out" as th engine was about to start! This is a new phenomenon, in the past once everything worked (ie the started turned the engine over, the engine started & off we go!)It just felt as if the keystart final position wasn't making the contact!

Hello there.im sure I posted that only once!!still I meant to say that the first order is a battery check .if the battery is fine on let's say a drop test then I would look at the starter.its most Likely the solinoid so you are best off removing it to check the unit.replace or repair as the budget allows.cheers:r
