The stearing column it attaches to is triangular in section. Once you have removed the lock bolt, the plate swivels (mine was a bit tight). Once you have rotated the plate on the UJ sufficiently, the UJ will drop off the steering column.

Did mine last year!

Just has a second thought!

Did you mean remove the UJ from the intermediate shaft? Once the UJ is free of the steering column, and the other lockbolt is removed you may have to stick a flat bladed screwdriver into the slot to open it before you can slide the UJ off the splines.Again mine was very tight so had to force the joint open.

make sure you mark it first and put it back exactly where it came off (apologies if "stating the bleeding obvious")

You must take the bolt out you cannot just loosen it.

Bolt has to come right out, there is a groove in the shaft not a flat along its length.

Not the "end of the World" if you loose the position, when it goes back on it should align with the lower UJ (could be wrong before you start)?

I did my upper UJ a couple of months ago. It was a bit of a ball ache because the splines had seized solid around the intermediate shaft and it took about 30 mins of going at it with flathead screwdriver, sh*tloads of penetrating spray and anything else I could find before it finally let go. Of course, in doing that I naturally completely lost the marker I'd made for where it needed to go back (note to self: masking tape no good for this!). In the end it didn't actually make any difference. When you come to fit the new UJ you'll find there's a bit of play and you may need several "goes" to get it right. Key thing to remember is that top and bottom UJs need to be "in phase" - ie lined up and parallel. If not you'll experience terribly notchy steering.

Are you replacing the bulkhead bearing at the same time? Worth upgrading to ball bearing if you've still got the original plastic number in there. But you'll need someone to help you!

Hope this helps
Will

Cheers teamlines. It's for a body lift, was hopeing to reuse the uj but that maybe out of the question, I saw the thread a while ago but search is down. I seem to remember a good alternative part mentioned , might do the bearing too but budget is non exsistant. Where did you sour ce the parts in the end? Thanks again mike a picture says a thousand words ect

Not entirely clear what you are doing here.

If the top UJ is buggered carry on as you are.

If you want to just seperate the steering for a body lift put that bolt back in and remove the bolt through the section that clamps on the triangular bit near the bulkhead. There are only 3 ways it can go on the triangular section so if you can't figure that out stop now!

No, earlier advice was to disconnect the uj from the steering column. You don't need to take the uj off the intermediate shaft to lift the body (and you won't get the uj off that shaft until you have disconnected it from the steering column anyway).

Once again, (yet again) my web site explains step-by-step how to do what you say you want to do. One bolt clamps the triangular section onto the steering column. Unbolt it, swivel the clamp, u/j drops off. It really is not hard.

If you are determined to change the u/j as well, then sandgrounder and barkychoc's instructions cover that.

You may well be able to reuse the UJ depending on how worn (or damaged...) it is. It'll no doubt be caked in greasy muck so give it a clean up and see how it looks/feels. But my advice would be if you don't need to change it then really don't bother...

But don't immerse in "Gunk" or similar, you'll wash all the grease out the bearings, just a wipe over with a rag.

Tvrgit your site has been brilliant thank you, fact is I have looked at the steering ujs for ten minutes, I tested the bolts to see if they would undo but unable to see how to release them I posted on here for advise I may or may not decide to replace the intermediate uj and bulk head bearing after closer inspection now I know how to get them off thanks again
