How is the performance? any other symptoms?
Most of the faults I can imagine causing such poor economy would always be accompanied by other symptoms.

Possible reasons.
Air filter blocked.
Exhaust blocked.
Turbo leak.
MAF/engine sensor not working correctly.
Injector timing out.
A tank of V-Power and a good blast up the motor way might help clear it out.

ked mate that's all I can say, my very underpowered 1.4 petrol mk1 which usually averages 28-30mpg got me 47 on a long run, just over quarter of a tank to do 154 miles, I think it was.
