Not so much obsessing but a never to be forgotten experience, as a pre teen I went with my parents to Catolica , I think my father won at the horses. ( , Parthea .? ) took off from Blackbushe landed at Lyon to refuel and on to Italy, earache and boiled sweets to suck followed by trying to yawn to reduce the pain, !

I'll never forget the Dakota .

Used to be a lovely one of these come into Sywell for maint G-VICE Cool reg too! Sadly spread itself over a field in Devon with the pilot luckily getting away with it!

A DC-3 forms a fundamental part of any decent zombie-apocalypse-collapse-of-western-civilisation-tinned-food-and-shotgun-cartridges survival plan.

On my top-ten-must-buy list, the DC-3 would occupy the first three slots. The highlands and islands radials-only trips need a bigger baggage carrier than the 18T, and the amount of fun we would have with a Dak or three would be legendary.

They don't, pilots out of their depths invariably do! You really need a proper instrument rating to fly one. A serious mini airliner!

Great stuff! If you don't mind me asking what is the spec of that RV-8? I take it you went for the full inverted oil system? I may have mentioned here (or another thread) I'm about to start my slow build RV-8, 180hp fixed pitch, Showplanes fastback. Been spending the last few days discussing shipping with Jessica over at Vans. Still busy sorting out the 'workshop' at the moment though. And have to bash my way through the tool-box test first! ha ha

That one has a 180hp and a fixed pitch prop in it. Full inverted oil system and fuel injection.

The support from Vans seems very good, and if you do cock a bit up they can soon ship you a new one.
The chap who owns it is an aircraft engineer by trade,as am I.It's also the 6th aircraft he's built at home over the years. I also do aircraft sheet metal for a day job so the build was pretty straight forward and there's a lot of build blogs and forums out there which can prove invaluable for hints and tips.
The pilot in the video is the other owner, he's a pilot for his day job, and used to fly small red jets in a well known aerobatic team.

It's been a long time coming, but weighing it all up there isn't much that comes close to the RV range for fun Vs cost Vs performance. I'm also an engineer by trade, but have no experience of riveting, and little of Al fabrication, so it should be fun! Can't wait to get started. Had a good look at Bob Ellis's build blog, and also Rick McBride's who by chance also built the other a/c I was considering - a Rans Courier S7.
