My step daughter's car had paint stripper poured over it last night, and all 4 tyres slashed. Suspect an ex boyfriend did it but no proof.

Question is how much roughly would it cost to prepare and repaint the car, any ideas?

Just looking for an idea of how much it is going to cost her.

Thanks in advance.

depends on the age of the car and the quality of the job but I suspect that you would be best going through the insurance. A semi decent respray is upwards of £1500, more if it's metallic.

has every panel been 'done'?

About a grand for a blowover, but it'll probably be a lot more due to the paint stripper.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I seem to recall that paint stripper needs lots more prep/neutralisation.

For a car of that value, if it's mechanically sound and still got some life left in it, I'd be tempted to rattlecan it myself.

Which panels have been damaged? It can sometimes be cheaper to find a scrapyard car in the same colour and then swap bonnet, doors etc over.

Stick new tyres on it.

Prep it yourself.

Find a mate of a mate of a mate who'll do it for beer tokens.

I once had a 200SX rewagged for paint + taking the sprayers sun to whitehaven to fetch his ebay purchase.

OP, we need to know the colour of the car and the location of the damage. I'm sure we can suggest a cost-effective method of sprucing it up to avoid the car being scrapped.

yes

E.G. replacement panels from breakers.

Doors £30 each, bonnet £20.

Do some matching of colours, ebay them and collect. Everything barring wings and roof sorted for >£200

I know the feeling having been through the same thing. Great thing to wake up to by the way..... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

It's not as easy as just respraying it as the panels will need to be treated otherwise you'll only run into issues further down the line.

As the cars worth so little it's not worth the bother in my opinion.

I wouldn't even go through insurance as she'll pay for it in the long run with increased premiums (wish I hadn't bothered), with the money it'll cost she'd be better off just buying a new car as she can get a similar car she has for cheaper than the repairs would cost.

Yep, cosmetically it is scrap, I would Ebay it as it is as someone will have a plan to Rat Look it or something, otherwise get a near enough colour and brush paint it, stick some part worns on, depends if anyone is bothered but really its still mobile from what you say, a weekend on it would have it looking ok, its never going to be concourse. I would make sure he has a visit from the Police or someone less formal as potentially he could do it again.
