Changing front wings.

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience or know of anyone who have changed the front wings from what I believe to be call clam shell wings to cycle wings?

I like the 'clam' wings but it's not current or particularly cool and as the car is going to be used for track days quite allot I'd like to change them. The main problem I can see is the holes down the side of the car, apart from that I assume it's just a case of bolting the cycle wings on?!

Easy as that... yeah right!

You'll need the cycle wing carriers that bolt to the back of the hub. Similar to the wing stays that support the front end of the clams, but mounted to the hub so the wings turn with the steering.

If you look through my post you can see on page two the cycle wing stays. Very easy uppgrade. I use original parts and it was just bolt on.

You may also need to change or modify the rack as existing rack may give you too much lock and wings mat hit side skins.

No really "bolt-on" is it. The top wishbone needs to come off the upright.

Brilliant, so it is a case of buying the cycle wings and the stay brakets and I'm away!

How did you fix the holes where clams were mounted?

You have three options...
1. The proper solution - where you have the side panels reskinned and resprayed.
2. The half way house - where you put a small square piece of ali behind each hole, filler from the outside and then spray in to match the rest of the car. I have seen this done quite effectively on a few cars
3. The quick cheap fix - fill the holes with a dome head bolt or similar. Chrome, black, painted whatever.

Actually it's via a nut.
My point was it means dismantling a safety critical aspect of the car, but then if you get nuts and bolts mixed up that's probably lost on you anyway.

Hardly rocket science is it.
Actually there's a nut holding the wheel spindle in too, the stay also bolts behind that, or do you "nut" it on? ....

Incorrect, if you have replaced the top wishbone rod ends with rose joints, then it is a bolt....and a nut.

Safety critical....priceless, what about some warnings about the wheel that could be off, that pretty safety critical before you've even touched anything else.

Also incorrect, they are Wing Stays and they are attached to the Vertical Link, using the threaded side of the Stub Axle. The hub rotates on the bearing, pretty much a useless and impossible place to mount a wing stay.

I could sit here and argue with pr#cks like you all day, but if you werent so sarcastic in the first place to a genuinly reasonable post then you might not get smart ar#es like me giving you grief!

Ok, ok, forgive me pointing out that part of the car will have to be dismantled to fit cycle wing stays.
Not "bolt-on" in the true sense as far as I'm concerned and thought the OP. might like to be forewarned.

And for the record, I kinda took it as read the OP would realise wheel mounting is safety critical, possibly not so with some of the other bits irrespective of what the various self-appointed tech gods call them.

For those familiar to modifying cars, the term "Bolt on" is used where you don't have to modify or fabricate things to do an upgrade/change. A "bolt on" piece might need some things to bolt off(??) before it is bolted on.

Cycle wings are a true bolt on modification. Do it!
