hi

I am after some help and advice. I own a 1973 Hillman Imp which I am intending on utilising a 98 Saxo VTR 8V engine. We are now at the point where we need to think about getting a suitable gearbox/transaxle but we are stumped on what to use. We did think about using a VAG box upside down like in the Ultimas but I have been told it wont work.
So does anyone know what we can use?

I looked into doing this back in 1977 when I had my competition Imp. The trouble is (or at least, was) that with most combinations of alternative engine and FWD box/final drive, you end up with funny gears - one forward and five reverse!

VTR 8v is a pretty uninspiring lump to use, why not use a 106 Rallye engine for a revvier, more powerful unit?

Transaxle configs are pretty rare on the TU, not sure which box you could use.

Unfortuantly the build has started and it wont be a standard 8v engine. The engine has fireblade carbs with a bogg brothers inlet manifold, newman ph3 cam and raceland exhaust manifold.

I think the imp 4 speed box will have to be rebuilt

modsports racers and hillclimbers have been building insane imps running on nice fuel for decades, so they are the guys to speak to. Jack Knight were the gearbox people i think, a call to them or quaife should point you at the right people. PM me if you have no success.

The limiting factor is how much torque it can survive, not how much power. I'd expect the Imp box to be eaten alive by pretty much any more modern engine than the weedy Imp original.
