E60 M5 clutch replacement
Discussion
My car is booked in for 18 January to have the clutch and flywheel replaced under warranty, as a result of clutch juddering in stop/start traffic.
Is the clutch release bearing (#2) always replaced as part of the kit? I assume the guide bush is replaced automatically, but have heard conflicting views on whether it should be greased (it is shipped as non-greased) and if so, will BMW know exactly what special grease to use?
Finally, the guide pin (#6) should be replaced too, I assume?

The release bearing is part of the clutch kit. The guide pin is not routinely changed but worth doing for the cost. BMW dealers will have the correct grease. It's worth changing No 1. too.

You seem to have gone that far in the research, why not change it yourself?
Otherwise you'll alwyas have questions as to what was actually replaced and how well they did the job.
I don't have the skills and a workshop and no interest in paying for this when BMW is repairing it under warranty. Otherwise you'll alwyas have questions as to what was actually replaced and how well they did the job.

I'd be interested to know which dealer is doing this for you.
Just in case I have a similar problem myself, it would be nice to know which dealer will do a proper job - and presumably not quibble.
Afraid it will not be of much help as I am based in Belgium. The outcome of this repair will also heavily influence what my long term prospect with the M5 will be, as I M only 4 months into ownership now. Under a 24 months approved used BMW warranty (called Premium Selection here). Symptoms: Severe clutch judder after pulling off the motorway and doing start/stop city driving. Somewhat "rough" shifting at higher rpm and severe "clunk" at WOT (may be a feature though, of S5 but it doesn't feel normal).
hmm..
I wanted to ask about the detail and process of getting the repair under warranty but
I guess it's quite different case as you're in Belgium and your car's under AUC warranty..
Mine's under fully comprehensive warranty but I'm not sure if my dealer's gonna say the judder's due to clutch wear, not other problem, hence not covered under warranty.
The judder seems to be getting rougher as I put miles on it..
Good for you though! should be able to enjoy your beast soon..

If you're in the UK and have the insured warranty through Mondial and are experiencing clutch judder my recommendation is to discuss the issue with the dealer as soon as possible. Any delay will only result in the judder getting more pronounced and further wear on the clutch disc. If your dealer is willing to consider a warranty claim and takes the gearbox out they'll have difficulty getting a warranty claim approved if the disc is worn down almost to the rivets whereas if there's plenty of meat left premature failure can be argued.

Phelix, I really appreciate that. That sounds very reasonable.
I'm gonna talk to the mechanic at the service station as I have oil service booked in for tomorrow.
Cheers!
There is a bit of a dilemma in all this.
If you buy the clutch and flywheel from Euro Car Parts (or CarParts4Less - same group) and the guide tube, pivot pin and spring and pressure plate bolts from BMW you'll be about £900 poorer if you catch one of their sales. An indie should be able to install the clutch and "tell" the SMG system about it for another £500 or so.
If you go to the main dealer they're unlikely to be able or willing to guarantee that it's a warranty claim until the gearbox is out. That's about £600 in labour (including refitting the box). If it's a warranty claim you're like a pig in the proverbial. If it isn't you face a dilemma. Do you pay the dealer's prices for what are the same parts you can buy from ECP (roughly 18-1900 versus 900) or do you politely ask for your car back and take it to an indie as mentioned above? If you can push the dealer to give you 10% off the parts and "Plus 4" or even "Plus 6" labour rates the dilemma all but goes away. And as you've paid for the parts and labour from BMW it's covered by warranty for 2 years regardless of what you do with the Mondial warranty.
Rassi's experience almost make me want to move to Belgium. Almost.

Yeap.. that's the exact dilemma I'm having at the moment. If you buy the clutch and flywheel from Euro Car Parts (or CarParts4Less - same group) and the guide tube, pivot pin and spring and pressure plate bolts from BMW you'll be about £900 poorer if you catch one of their sales. Hence I tried to double check if there's been any gearbox related work done on my car
but when I called BMW premium phone line and all the dealerships where my car had previous services, they wouldn't give me the detail. They say it's due to data protection scheme and I'm not allowed to have any information regarding repairs.
I have all the paper work from my previous owner but I just wanted to double check. I'm getting in touch with him so if it never had clutch change then I may be out of luck as I'm on nearly 71k mileage, it's likely that my clutch has already worn out.
Will see..
Cheers Phelix!
