The MOT test flagged my nearside headlamp as " miles too high". I have tried to readjusting all three wing nut adjusters but the light then flops about in the pitch axis. Looking at the front it seems that the bottom spring hook isn't attched to the outside of the lens like the other two hooks are and that is why it isn't pulling it down enough.
Is there anyway I can get at the lower hook and reattach it to the outer lens without having to take the bubble out? Perhaps if I slacken off all three adjusters and push the light fowards I could get a piece of wire under the light to attach to the spring hook and twist it back on to the front of the lens .

Chris,

My headlight fell into the glass pod when I was trying to change the bulb. I spent about an hour fiddling (without having to take the glass out) with the light trying to ease it onto the springs/clips. I found that the best way to get it back in place, was to get the lamp to sit in the spring nearest the outside of the wing, and also the bottom one. Once you've got it in this position, you should be able to get a thin, but long screw driver to the other clip/spring (the one nearest to the engine, and the only one you can see through the inspection hatch), and whilst pulling back on the lamp, ease the clip over it. It's all a bit fiddly, but with a bit of patience, it's possible. Be careful not to let the lamp fall forward though, because dirt get's into the pod, and the edge of the lamp can scratch the paint.

Hope this helps,

Dan.

Its actually the bottom spring that appears to be not hooked around the front of the lens although your procedure relates to the inner most spring - for ease of access,I presume. Should I unbolt the lamp from the vertical bracket and then the light is free to move around on its spring adjusters?

I didn't have to unbolt anything on mine. I did find that the springs moved out of their mountings though, so I had to let the lamp drop through to the pod to re-seat the springs, before trying to refit the lamp itself.

Perhaps your's is an older design if it doesnt have this.
On my 98 car there is a white bracket with a single bolt that seems to hold the lamp assy in place. Does anyone know whether I should release this first in order to reset the bottom spring catch around the lens face?

Yes, mine has that, but you don't need to un bolt it. That holds the whole pod in place. I was thinking along the same lines when I was trying to get mine back in, but then that leads in to having to re-seal the pod to the bodywork etc.
