Yes, another what car(s) thread!

Currently drive a Discovery 3 and it's been brilliant. Roomy, great offroad and ticks all the right boxes. Unfortunately it was stolen before Christmas and was found burnt out in a field.

frown

However I now have the insurance settlement in my bank account (Admiral were brilliant, can't recommend them enough) and therefore the fun of new car shopping begins.

Budget is up to £35k (don't need to spend it all) and my first thought is to just get a Disco 4/Range Rover but would like to hear other suggestions. Main job of the car is to ferry children and drive to see parents who live in a place that gets a fair chuck of snow (hence 4WD being essential).

It's got to be an RS6 then!!

With the remaining £3k you can get the MTM remap to 702bhp; just an option wink

If you know me you'll know I'm a huge Land Rover fan, so I'll alway punt a vote to LR.

That said, if you want something different and/or fun then there are some interesting vehicles about. These are all D3 sized:

If you are wanting some on road pace then you might find a Cayenne Turbo S interesting too.

RS4 avant with mud/snow tyres. Otherwise a discovery as they really are great cars.

If you consider something else you would need to consider the tyres as most proper 4x4's have all season tyres or mud rated tyres as standard, they will make the biggest difference getting where you need to go.

The only thing a discovery will give you is extra ground clearance.

Ran winter tyres on the Discovery (and the Range Rover before that) so that wouldn't be an issue. RS4/RS6 do sound interesting/nutty!

V10 RS6 has a very solid reliability record too. They're alarmingly fast.

Clearance can be handy though, and related would be approach departure angles. Also lets not forget a D3 isn't just AWD either. It has advanced traction sytems that not only try and keep all 4 wheels in contract with the surface at all times (for stability and traction), but can also break and control individual wheels and on the fly lock or vari lock the centre and rear (optional) diffs. HDC and low range only enhance it's abilities should you really find yourself in bother.

I hope you can turn that system off, to stop having to replace alloys all the time wink

Thinking more about the RS4/RS6 is that given I will drive 15k a year in it, it will cost a fair chunk compared to a Disco. Plus I do have a fun weekend car already so maybe a S6 will suffice?

However, the idea of a V10 is hard to ignore.

I was going to say Toyota Landcruiser if you wanted a new car, but

New Price: Model shown is Landcruiser LC4 3.0 £47,445

Used but new price:
2012 Toyota Land Cruiser Diesel Sw D-4D LC4 5dr Auto [190] 3.0 £37,495, 18K miles

Go for a cheap Range Rover?

For under £35K that would be one hell of a Justy.

I love the fact that the OP has gone from wanting a 4x4 to being tempted by an RS6.
