Advice about gearbox please - what is this?

Hi all,

Some of you may have seen my other posts about the fact I've changed a straight cut type 9 box for a standard one so that its a little quieter on the road and I have no real need for that box as not running that amount of power!

Not the best place but the easiest place to list.

While I know very little about the box I did put as much detail on the advert but instantly i've had an email asking for info.

I was wondering if from the pictures below anyone maybe able to tell me the following or if not then maybe tell me how to find out..!

Type of gears (I think Quaife)?

Ratios?

They are probably quaife gears as I think they're the only suppliers that have a straight cut gear set that fits the later type 9 with the uprated layshaft support bearing that I'm pretty sure this has (If you take a photo of the front of the box from under the input shaft I could confirm)

Ratios: You'll have to count the teeth and work it out yourself

Other things of note: The alloy top plate, which is a nice addition, and it's running brass rather than uprated synchros, the straight cut boxes we build have stronger ones on 3rd and 4th

Thank you for that information. I have been asked a few questions which I've managed to answer but could you help me with this one?

'Hi,sorry to be a pain, just a couple more questions, can you confirm that the box is the HD version with the needle roller mainshaft conversion,does it have any ID numbers starting QB---- & does it have a gearstick.

It has no QB numbers and it comes with no gear stick but I have no idea about the 'HD version with the needle roller mainshaft conversion'

Also you mentioned a picture of the front of the box....

The gear ratios you should be able to work out by marking the output shaft and turning the input shaft through one rotaiton and measuring the output shaft rotations, if this is done in each gear then you should get them all. The Quaiffe site has some good gear ratio charts to give you an idea of where you should be close to.

I saw the box on ebay and thought it was a god deal, good luck and stand your ground!

Thanks for that, found details confirming the ratios - 1st – 2.04, 2nd – 1.54, 3rd – 1.21, 4th – 1.1, 5th – 0.87.

I'm sticking to my guns. If it doesn't go then I won't worry. It makes a good workshop ornament!
