I'm off to sunny Naples, FL for a few days and will be driving from Miami, does anyone have any "local" knowledge of I75? In particular what a safe speed is / are lots of radar or plane traps on that route? I'll probably be on it around 8pm and wanting to get to the villa and not hang around!

Also in Naples, does anyone know of a good Churrascaria like a Fogo de Chao or equivalent? Failing that a good Brazilian/Argentinian/Texan steak house?

Thanks

Dave

I-75 is a very intensively patrolled highway. US State Troopers, FDoT and DEA/ATF all 'hunt' this route due to it's reputation as a arterial route for drug traffic.
FL Highway Patrol are a pretty humourless bunch and tourists are by no means immune to their venom.
Between 5 and 10mph over is safe - above that you are at risk of a citation and a vehicle search.
My 2c - buy a radar detector if you are determined to flout the law - but woe betide if you get busted for speeding with a detector in your car.

drove it from miami to tampa a couple of times earlier this year. few police and easily visible due to their penchance for parking on the verge or central reservation with lights on.

touched over 100 for a good stretch but my local colleague was crapping it at that so kept it below 80.

US Pol tend to use forward facing radar from moving cars.
The only police cars you see first are the ones that want to be seen....

Take the Timiami highway instead and enjoy the drive.
Stop at one or two of the viewing platforms in the everglades.
If you like photography there is a gallery that show Clyde Butcher's work, which is stunning.

Great thanks suspected as much but thought worth asking!

Is the grill club still going? I can't find a website for it directly and one review link says no longer in business!

I can confirm that this is true as last October I was pulled over on a side road off I-75 by a patrol car who clocked my speed whilst approaching me in oncoming traffic. He even knew my speed fairly accurately.

Luckily I was in a hire car and had my British licence, and the cop said something about me probably being confused between miles and kilometers (since I was European after all) and he let me go with only a stern warning about watching my speed. I suspect that he didn't want to deal with the paperwork for a tourist speeding ticket hence letting me go.

In addition, the hire car was on Virginia plates, which may or may not have made a difference to the paperwork that would have been required to be completed. Does anyone know if this would have been a factor in the cop's decision?

When are you going? Even in mid-summer it'll be getting dark at 8PM.

Yep thats what appens - making 'progress' on any road in the US without a radar detector is risky when you consider that the car coming towards you in the distance could easily be a 'bear' with fwd radar fixing your speed....

I picked up a detector 10yrs ago in the US for a $80 and always take it with me...

I'm always amazed how many Police there are on the roads in Florida, compared to ther UK. We drove from Orlando down to Miami on the Turnpike with cruise set at 70 (speed limit on that road). Now and again a car would drift past us at a barely faster speed and then a few mins later we'd see it having been pulled over.

I did see them stopped on sunken central reservation areas a few times, lasering traffic approaching them. Never saw them with lights on while stopped like that, so very hard to spot.

Anyway, it's going to be dark when the OP is making the journey so exceeding the limit in the dark is a pure gamble, even if conditions allow.

FL Highway patrol cruisers have both forward and rear scanning radar, so you can also be busted by a cop ahead of you, traveling in the same direction. They also use a wide variety of unmarked vehicles, so not as easy to spot as a marked cruiser.
My daughter is an FL based Sheriffs Deputy. Although her specific remit is not traffic, she has the occasional cause to pull tourists over for traffic infractions.
Being a UK tourist doesn't make a scrap of difference if the miscreant has committed and offence that would get a local ticketed.
The difference is, that rather than writing a citation or a 'ticket to appear', the offender is invited to head to the nearest ATM and to pay on the spot. Failure to comply would result in arrest and jail until a night-judge became available to adjudicate.
It's ALL dependent on attitude of course. If you are apologetic and filled with remorse, chances are you'll get a "courtesy notice" for a minor indescretion. If you behave like a dick, it usually ends up with a visit downtown.
State Troopers are pretty low on the law enforcement totem - and only deal with traffic. Consequently they tend to be particularly honery and confrontational. Their sense of humor is also invariably AWOL, so trying to bluff/joke your way out of a ticket is ill-advised.

Hmm, maybe not - I've only been a couple of times and the last one was about 2 years ago.
